Hembree Highlights
February 12, 2021
Note from Mrs. Smith
YAY, a four day weekend! I hope that you all have enjoyed a day off together. (Don't forget you are off on Monday too!) I have been doing a lot of reflecting and having conversations with my own children about Black History Month. I wanted to take a minute to share a few of my favorite quotes:
"The greatness of a man is not how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him." - Bob Marley
"We may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated." -Maya Angelou
"You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right." -Rosa Parks
These quotes speak to me because they impact the person I strive to be. They serve as a reminder to live with integrity, to not be defeated, and to stay in the right. I hope to be a small living example of what those things look like.
Here at Hembree we know that it is our job as educators, as parents, as a community to ensure that all students know and understand that people are people. We may see color, but seeing the heart of a person is what makes us "right." Being respectful and kind is integrity in which should impact every action we take. Standing strong and getting up after a defeat is the resilience that we want to instill in our next generation. In order to know where we want to go, we have to know where we have been. That is what Black History month is all about. It is about reflection of progress made to overcome racism and a reminder that our work is not yet done.
Since Valentines is upon us, it is also a perfect time to share my heart for your kids and this community. My hope is that EVERY kid in this building and online knows that I love them. I also hope they know and feel that love from their teachers, assistants, and all the adults at Hembree. Being loved provides a sense of safety and security. Like no other time in recent history do our students need that reassurance of being loved and accepted more.
So this weekend make sure to have conversations about what your child is learning in regards to Black History Month. Also make sure to say "I love you" one more time than normal. Give them an extra hug and share a laugh with them. We know that this has been a challenging time with the pandemic for our students. When you give that extra hug, it not only reduces anxiety and stress for your child, it does the same for YOU!
I hope that this weekend is full. It may not be full of activities, but I hope that is full with conversation, laughter, and love.
Have a great weekend!
Stay Strong! Stay Positive! Stay Well!
Sincerely,
AJ Smith

Virtual Science Days!
Please join us on March 15th and March 22nd at 6:30 p.m. for Virtual Science Days! Each session will be "live" and under an hour. You may also choose an "at your own pace" model with instructional material so that you are able to conduct these experiments at your convenience. Your family will be provided with all necessary materials for the experiments that will either be sent home with your student or available for pick-up for our virtual students. There will be (1) set of supplies sent home for each family, so please sign up per family not per child. We'll need to know the grade and homeroom teacher of your eldest child in order to send home supplies. The event will take place on TEAMS. Registration closes on February 22nd, so that we have time to secure and deliver supplies for every family that is interested in this program.

Kayden Lopez Memorial
We are inviting you to a celebration of life for Kayden Lopez. Kayden was in Mrs. Barimo's class for the 2019-2020 school year. He passed away very unexpectedly last year, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to celebrate him then. We are going to gather on February 13, at 10:00 a.m. inside the café to come together to remember him and his sweet smile.
We will be outside and make sure to socially distance. Please know that you will still be expected to wear a mask. We ask that you practice all safety measures possible during this event for Kayden.
If you are not able to join us in person, this event will also be live-streamed on teams. Use the link below to join us Saturday at 10 a.m.
