Orange Shirt Day

September 30th

Every Child Matters

September 30th has been declared Orange Shirt Day annually, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and well being, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters.

Southview will recognize Orange Shirt Day on Monday September 30th. Below are a variety of resources for you to choose from based on your grade level. We also have a school-wide ceremony planned as a way to unite together in friendship.

This year is the International Year of Indigenous Language. We will use our white boards in the front hallway to write messages and simple words for all to practice.

Why Orange Shirts?

I Lost My Talk - by Rita Joe

I lost my talk
The talk you took away.
When I was a little girl
At Shubenacadie school.

You snatched it away:
I speak like you
I think like you
I create like you
The scrambled ballad, about my world.

Two ways I talk
Both ways I say,
Your way is more powerful.

So gently I offer my hand and ask,
Let me find my talk
So I can teach you about me.
