A Message from Principal Nixon--Week of June 1, 2020
Dear Northwoods Families,
It's hard to believe, but we only have TEN school days to go until the end of the year. Please encourage your students to stay connected with their teachers during the last two weeks of school. Even though report cards will be sent this Friday, please remember that we still have another week of school after that and we are committed to providing high-quality, rigorous instruction through June 12th.
Please read through the information below. Specific information regarding 5th Grade Graduation is detailed towards the bottom of the newsletter. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me or your child's teacher.
Important End-of-Year Information
Pick-Up Process for Student Belongings
Curbside pick-ups for student belongings begin tomorrow, June 1st. All families have been assigned a specific date, according to last name (see below). To better accommodate working families, we have scheduled two pick-up windows on each pick-up date. Simply stop by during the window that works best for your family.
So that we can more effectively limit potential exposure between individuals, the school building will only be accessible for families who need to pick-up medications. Otherwise, staff members will assist with locating and retrieving student belongings on pick-up days. Please read through the following pick-up procedures:
- Families will follow the yellow highlighted route (pictured below) when picking up student belongings on their assigned date. Parents may only pick up items for their children. A photo ID is required for pick-up.
- Families picking up student belongings will use the carpool line and will stay in their car. Pick-up stations will be set-up under the front awning. Staff will locate and retrieve student materials and bring them to cars.
- Families will have the opportunity to drive around to the bus loop and park to browse the Lost & Found items.
- Families needing to pick up medications will park in the front parking lot and enter through the front office.
Anyone needing to enter the building is REQUIRED by WCPSS to wear a face covering and maintain social distancing. It is strongly recommended that individuals wear gloves.
Students who will NOT return to a WCPSS school next year should return all library books, EL books/materials, borrowed Chromebooks, and hotspots. Stations to return those items will be available during pick-up days.
All other students who will be returning to a WCPSS school (even middle school) should not return library books, borrowed Chromebooks, or hotspots at this time. Directions for returning those items will be provided at a later date.
Other News & Information
Spirit Week--June 1st - 5th
Please join us for our final Spirit Week of the 2019-2020 school year. A flyer with more specific information is below.
End-of-Year Celebration Parades
The Northwoods Staff would like to recognize and celebrate our amazing students one last time before summer break begins. With that in mind, we would like to invite all of our Northwoods families to a drive-thru parade at Northwoods Elementary on Friday, June 12th. More details will be sent out in the next week.
Northwoods Elementary Family Intent Survey
If you haven't already done so, please take a few minutes to complete the Northwoods Elementary Family Intent Survey for each of your students who are currently enrolled. Doing so helps us accurately plan and fill future staffing needs.
Year-End Report Cards
As a reminder, year-end report cards will be emailed to parents, via confidential email, on Friday, June 5th between 11:00 - 1:00pm.
Promotion & Retention
By state law, any student who was not being considered for retention prior to March 13th cannot be retained by school officials. As such, please know that all students at Northwoods will be promoted to the next grade level unless I have made direct contact with you to discuss options. Additionally, students who have a documented Tier 3 reading and/or math plan will be "promoted with interventions," which means he/she will continue to the next grade level with existing intervention structures in place.
Yearbooks
All yearbooks that were pre-ordered have been distributed to teachers and will be available for pickup with your child's belongings, beginning June 1st. For those still needing to purchase a yearbook, the PTA will have a table set up at the front of the school on Saturday June 6th starting at 9am. We will have 60 books available and they will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The yearbooks are $20, and we will accept exact cash or check made out to Northwoods PTA. Sorry we cannot make change at this time.
5th Grade Celebration Information
Due to ongoing restrictions as part of the COVID-19 school closure, we are unable to conduct a traditional ceremony for our 5th grade students this year. In lieu of a traditional ceremony, we will share an end-of-year video tribute to our students and conduct a drive-by graduation parade (see invite above).
Parade Details
Date: Friday, June 12th
Time: 9:00 - 11:00 AM
During the parade, we will have stations set up for certificates, photos, and souvenirs from the PTA. School staff will be present to help celebrate and cheer for our graduates.
- The parade route is published below.
- Please know that, due to current Phase 2 restrictions, all students and parents must remain in their cars during the parade.
Northwoods Elementary PTA Information
PTA UPDATE:
Reminder! Our PTA, like so many organizations, has moved entirely online & virtual for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. We will be holding a call-in/video conference General Membership Meeting on Thursday, June 18, 2020 at 6:30pm. Once we have the conferencing information, we will post it on the Northwoods Calendar as well as on our PTA website at: https://www.northwoodspta.com/
The PTA Nominations Committee is still looking for many volunteers to fill roles and positions for PTA programs for next school year, but we will not be able to "elect" the executive positions/make them official until an in-person General PTA Meeting can be held. Stay tuned for more info as we have it, and please contact northwoodsnominations@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering in any way for the 2020-2021 school year!
Thank you all for your continued support of our school community, and we can't wait until we can see you again!
