What's Happening In Room 6?

This week we are going to finish up our Small Moments by having our very first publishing party. During our party, we will share our small moment stories and have a chance to sit in the author chair to answer questions from our readers! :) We will also have a small snack to celebrate our hard work!

We will also be starting a new project this week. We are going to use a little creativity to write a story about our Pet Reindeer. Your child will brainstorm ideas such as...the reindeer's favorite foods, favorite color, least favorite activities, and how they will take care of their pet reindeer. We will then create our reindeer that will decorate our classroom until our holiday break.

We are also discussing another type of writing - the friendly letter. We read a story called Dear Mr. Blueberry to learn about the format of a letter. We learned the five parts of a letter so far. This week, we will begin writing our very own friendly letters.

Our story this week is called Who Works Here? It is a nonfiction story about our community helpers. We will use this story to discuss main idea and supporting details. The story also lends itself nicely to cause and effect so we will review that as well.

I will not be assigning written homework over our holiday break. Please continue to log your child's reading on his/her calendar over our break. Thank you for your support at home!

On Thursday this week, we will have our Unit 3 assessment. I will be sending home a review sheet for you to look over with your child. We will spend next week playing some festive games to practice the skills we have learned this unit. Some of the skills include telling time to the half hour; counting dimes, nickels and pennies; exchanging coins; skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s; and solving number stories.

We are SHARKS!

We continue to work diligently to be SHARKS everyday! Each day of the week, I focus on a specific trait that corresponds to our acronym SHARK. Our traits that we strive for are...

Always Positive

We also discuss our district's motto - Pennridge T.A.K.E.S. P.R.I.D.E. The month of December was dedicated to Kindness. When your child identified an act of kindness that they demonstrated, they wrote it down on a piece of paper in the shape of a light bulb. I collected all of the light bulbs and strung them around our classroom door because "Our Class Shines When We are Kind". It looks amazing! Once we took a second to think about the little acts of kindness we do each day...we had lots to write about! :)
