Sierra IB News

Each week in the IB News corner we will share information about our IB program here at Sierra. This week we feature a concept that is central to IB Philosophy and what it means to be an IB learner. Here at Sierra, we believe in the importance of having agency. Students with agency are actively involved in their learning. They take initiative, express their interests and, in partnership with their teachers, set goals for their learning. Students have voice, choice, and ownership in their learning. Agency along with self-efficacy (the belief in their ability to succeed) can inspire students to take action on their learning.

How can you support agency at home?

  • Be an active listener.

  • Ask questions and give choices such as meals, options for chores, and suggestions for family activities.

  • Encourage a growth mindset by focusing on the process instead of only the product.

For more information on agency and other elements of our IB program, please check out our Sierra PYP Parent Handbook. If you have additional questions about our IB program, please contact our IB program coordinator, Lisa Johnson, at ljohnson@rocklinusd.org.
