Communication from the Board of Trustees
Vice President Andy Lie is a proud parent of two JUHSD alumni. He, too, addressed the turnover rate of teachers in this district. He noted that when teachers have continuity and stay with the district, they are able to form supportive relationships with students. He feels the staff housing project is one way that we can retain teachers, rather than losing their talents to neighboring districts. He thanked everyone in attendance, including teachers and staff watching from home, and stated that their work has not gone unnoticed by the Board.
Board Clerk Carla Ng-Garrett was happy to see Student Trustees physically present at the meeting and thanked them for reporting current site concerns, including cafeteria menu suggestions, to the Board. She's grateful for the support teachers and staff provided her son during his time with JUHSD and looks forward to having her younger children attend our district. Ms. Ng-Garrett shared that her children are one reasons she gives back to the community as a board member. She vowed to keep the best interest of our district students as the Board's top priority.
Trustee Kalimah Salahuddin thanked the Board and Superintendent Presta for working together this past Saturday to review board governance and reconnect as a team. As a parent of three children, all of whom graduated from JUHSD schools, she thanked their former teachers and staff members for touching their lives in such profound ways. Her continued hope, as a board member, is that our district staff continue to do the same for all future JUHSD students.
Trustee Nick Occhipini enjoyed visiting the site's Back to School Nights and talking with staff about programs they are currently hosting at their schools. He also enjoyed connecting with families and listening to their concerns about Afghanistan. He acknowledged that students are still getting used to their bell schedules and is looking forward to hearing more feedback from the Student Trustees. He stated he'll continue to encourage high levels of governance, and standards of behavior, both in the classrooms and in the boardroom.
