Counselor's Corner
If your child acts out at school, what should you do? Here are some strategies to try:
- Be a team player. Meet with the teacher to discuss ways you can work together to improve the situation.
- Communicate regularly. Inform the teacher of preferred methods of communication (notes, email, phone calls). Ask your child's teacher to tell you about good days as well as your child's no-so-good ones. That way, you can praise him for his good behavior as well as talk to him about the problems.
- Try to keep expectations consistent between home and school. Let you child know that you expect good behavior in both places. For example, if talking out of turn is the problem at school, remind him not to interrupt at home.
5th Grade News
5th grade is moving out of Earth Science and into Matter and Energy/Force, Motion and Energy. Reviewing Earth Science notes and reading books helps keep this knowledge fresh. Keep in mind the web-based resources students can use at home to give them a head start or keep learning fresh. Jason.org, StemScopes, BrainPOP!, and Edusmart are some programs Miller offers students.
Reading
Our students will be digging into the big question of What Makes People Take Action? To aid in the finding, our teachers will be exposing students to literary nonfiction (biographies and autobiographies). They will also be reviewing and learning more about the genres of fiction, expository, persuasive, and procedural texts.
Writing
Our students will continue writing for their portfolios. The two pieces that will be added will be responding to text, where they will write about what they have either been learning about or something they are reading. The other will be a persuasive essay, where they will write to try and persuade the reader into establishing a position on a topic using sound reasoning, details, and relevant evidence.
Social Studies
Students are still diving into the history of the United States. They will finish up Unit 3 which covers the rest of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Then students will head into Unit 4 which cover Manifest Destiny.
Math
The second semester in math will seem fast a furious as we dig deeper into decimals and work our way through geometry and financial literacy. We will be learning to incorporate the concepts from the first semester to build and prepare this second semester. In addition to Think Through Math, students can now access math through iStation to work on building skills at home.
6th Grade News
6th grade is moving out of Earth Science and into Matter and Energy/Force, Motion and Energy. Reviewing Earth Science notes and reading books helps keep this knowledge fresh. Keep in mind the web-based resources students can use at home to give them a head start or keep learning fresh. Jason.org, StemScopes, BrainPOP!, and Edusmart are some programs Miller offers students.
Math
We will begin this semester where we left off, conquering algebra! Students are learning how algebra relates to real life and the importance of knowing processes when using algebraic skills. Then it's full speed ahead into geometric relationships. Many students will find these concepts difficult, but you can help them work at home using both Think Through Math and iStation math.
Writing
Our students will be adding to their portfolio collections. The two pieces that 6th graders will be focusing on this quarter will be a personal narrative and persuasive letter, where they will construct a letter to someone trying to persuade that person to establish a position on a topic using sound reasoning, details and relevant evidence.
Social Studies
Our students are still busy learning about the history, demographics, and way of life all around the world. This quarter they will conclude Unit 4 which covers Europe. They will move to Unit 5 that will teach them about the culture, geography, and much more about Sub-Saharan Africa. To round out the 3rd quarter, students will move into Southwest Asia and North Africa.
Reading
Students will answer the big question of What's Fair and Not Fair? To assist; teachers will be exposing students to further their knowledge on the genres of fiction, literary nonfiction, persuasive, expository texts.
