Main Idea

The poem, “I am a Christian” by Maya Angelou, is mainly pointing out that every Christian has flaws. The poem points out the usual stereotypes that a Christian receives like, perfect, clean, and strong and then explains that Christians are not these things and that its okay.

I'm A Christian by Maya Angelo

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin."

I'm whispering "I was lost,"

Now I'm found and forgiven.

When I say..."I am a Christian"

I don't speak of this with pride.

I'm confessing that I stumble

and need CHRIST to be my guide.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not trying to be strong.

I'm professing that I'm weak

and need HIS strength to carry on.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not bragging of success.

I'm admitting I have failed

and need God to clean my mess.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not claiming to be perfect,

My flaws are far too visible

but, God believes I am worth it.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I still feel the sting of pain,

I have my share of heartaches

So I call upon His name.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not holier than thou,

I'm just a simple sinner

who received God's good grace, somehow.

Why I chose this poem:

I chose this poem because it is something that I strongly connect to and believe in. This poem has a great meaning behind it and all the other poems I read didn’t strike me and didn't have any meaning to me like this one did.

Free To Be Me by Francesca Battistelli

At twenty years of age
I'm still looking for a dream
A war's already waged
For my destiny
But you've already won the battle
And you've got great plans for me
Though I can't always see

'Cause I got a couple dents in my fender
Got a couple rips in my jeans
Try to fit the pieces together
But perfection is my enemy
On my own I'm so clumsy
But on your shoulders I can see
I'm free to be me

When I was just a girl
I thought I had it figured out
My life would turn out right
And I'd make it here somehow
But things don't always come that easy
And sometimes I would doubt

'Cause I got a couple dents in my fender
Got a couple rips in my jeans
Try to fit the pieces together
But perfection is my enemy
On my own I'm so clumsy
But on your shoulders I can see
I'm free to be me

And you're free to be you

Sometimes I believe
That I can do anything
Yet other times I think
I've got nothing good to bring
But you look at my heart and you tell me
That I've got all you seek
And it's easy to believe
Even though

'Cause I got a couple dents in my fender
Got a couple rips in my jeans
Try to fit the pieces together
But perfection is my enemy
On my own I'm so clumsy
But on your shoulders I can see
I'm free to be me

Song Connection:

In the poem it says

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not claiming to be perfect,

My flaws are far too visible

but, God believes I am worth it.

The song, Free To Be Me by Francesca Battistelli, is all about how she knows that she isn’t perfect and that she isn’t good enough but through the eyes of God she is exactly who she is supposed to be.

My Poem:

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I still feel the sting of pain,

I have my share of heartaches

So I call upon His name.

The main idea of my poem is that no matter how hard our lives get there is always someone that is there for us. So I wrote my poem more about a sad time in life to demonstrate just what I mean by that.

I Know That I Am With You

When I feel empty and alone

I know that you are with me

When I cant seem to carry on

I know that you are with me

When all my problems seem too much

I know that you are with me

When it seems like you’re my only crutch

I know that you are with me

When it feels like nothings right

I know that you are with me

When I see the end in sight

I know that you are with me

When my time comes and everything is filled with sadness

I know that you are with me

When it is my turn to ask you for forgiveness

I know that you are with me

When you give me your amazing grace

I know that you are with me

And when I finally see your face

I know that I am with you
