October Newsletter
Principal's Letter
Hello Viking Parents and Guardians,
October is an exciting month for a couple of reasons: parent-teacher conferences on the 4th and 11th, as well as our first all school dance party Friday the 13th. Please check this Sign Up Genius from PSTO for these events, and thank you in advance for your donations.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent Conferences will be two different days from 4:30 pm- 8:00 pm in the MPR. Parents with students last name A through L ,come to conferences Oct. 4th and parents with students last name M-Z, come Oct. 11th. All conferences will take place arena style in the MPR. We will utilize a different format for the next set of conferences. We are asking parents to be mindful of the length of their conferences and try to limit conversations to around 6 minutes. Please set up a specific appointment time outside of conferences if you need to speak with a teacher at length about a matter.
School Dance Party Requirements
October 13th from 7pm- 9pm is the first dance party of the year. FYI: Students with more than 10 unexcused tardies will not be allowed to attend the Oct. 13th dance. In addition, students with multiple behavior referrals may be restricted from attending or may need a parent present in order for them to attend. Students and parents will be notified before the dance.
Iowa Assessments
Assessments will take place the week of October 23rd. We have an altered schedule that will be placed on the NW website by the end of this week. Please make sure your student has a good night’s rest and breakfast in the morning. NWJH serves breakfast every morning in the cafeteria starting at 8:35 am.
Circles for Restorative Justice
I will co-host a community circle October 18th from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Coralville Library. Please join me to talk about things that are important to us as a community. All stakeholders are welcome. In addition, if you are interested in being a circle keeper, we have training dates coming up November 14th-16th and 17th-19th from 8am-4pm. Kay Pranis, trainer and writer on Peacemaking Circles and restorative justice, will lead both trainings in Iowa City. Please email me ASAP if you are interested. Availability is limited.
PSTO
The next PSTO meeting will take place Wednesday October 25th from 6pm-7pm in the choir room at NW. Please join us as we plan to host the District Parent Organization meeting in November, as well as work on the not for profit status.
Have a wonderful October,

MUSIC AUXILIARY REPORT—SEPTEMBER 2017
The Northwest Junior High Bands are off to a terrific start!!! The NWJH 8th grade band had their first-ever marching experience Friday, September 22 with the tune “Build Me Up, Buttercup” with the West High School marching bands and Alumni Band for half-time. It was wonderful to have approximately 400+ musicians on the field!
Both 7th and 8th grade jazz bands have auditioned and started this last week. Mr. Brown will be working with the 7th grade jazz band rehearsals on Monday/Wednesday and the 8th grade jazz band on Tuesday/Friday mornings. Lots of exciting possibilities with these ensembles!
Several 7th & 8th graders have expressed interest in auditioning for SEIBA Honor Band. They are diligently working on scales and etudes for a home audition in November. We are able to take only 21 NWJH students to Fairfield in January for the auditions.
Finally, we would like to extend a special welcome to Janis Deyak for representing the NW Bands with the Music Auxiliary this year.
Sincerely,
Jane Triplett
