The Buzz
Ms. Larrabee's 1st Grade Class
The Buzz This Week (11/16 - 11/20)
Writing: Last week, we received pen pal letters from a third grade class attending Eudora Elementary School. This is the Elementary School I used to teach at while I was living in Kansas. We'll be starting a monthly pen pal writing experience with this third grade class! Last week we learned about the town of Eudora and read our letters from our pen pals. This week, we'll be writing our rough drafts, revising, editing and writing our final copies to send back to Eudora!
Reading: As we move into this week, the children will be listening to a variety of stories and reflect on the characters' feelings and how their feelings can change when they learn a lesson. A great extension to this learning at home would be asking your child, "Would you feel the same way as this character?" or "How is the character feeling right now and why do you think they feel that way?" We'll also read a short passage about a teacher. With this passage, we'll continue to analyze the character, but we'll also infer, determine the main idea and supporting details and make text to self connections.
Word Work: This week our studies in vocabulary will be with the consonant blends: gr, dr, and tr. The new sight words we'll be practicing include: not, write, way, after, has.
Science: This week we'll continue exploring and acting like scientists as we learn about light and sound.
Math: We're starting our geometry unit this week in math. This week we'll learn about and describe two-dimensional shapes, discover where shapes are seen in our every day life and describe different shape properties.

Last Week...
(11/9 - 11/13)
The kids did a wonderful job during our Veteran's Day assembly! Thank you to all of our families for supporting the celebration through dress, conversations at home and/or joining our celebration through being a Veteran to our country.
Also, an enormous THANK YOU to everyone for the wonderful donations received in our KirkCare Food Drive. Together, our class donated 70 canned goods and meals to our local families via Kirkcare last Wednesday. Again, your generosity is greatly appreciated!
We finished creating our first Student Treasure book: The ABC's of Ms. Larrabee's Class! The final piece was sent to the publisher last Wednesday and we should have our books returned to us prior to Winter Break!
