The Walter Trumbauer Secondary Theatre Festival

Good Luck to the BHS Drama Club at the State Festival! They will be performing their one act play, "Citizen's Arrest" as well as many individual competitions. Two one act productions will be chosen to represent Alabama at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in the spring.


The Walter Trumbauer Festival has provided quality training and performance opportunities for Alabama theatre students at the secondary level since 1940. The educational impact of this event is substantial. The festival consists of 28 individual events, a one act play festival, a studio theatre festival—all for 9th through 12th grades, as well as scholarship auditions and college screening for high school seniors and junior college students.


Students qualified for the state competition by earning a rating of “superior” at the recent district festival held at James Clemens High School. At all levels of competition, students receive critiques from qualified teachers and theatre practitioners, allowing them to improve their theatrical skills. The state festival kicks off with the scholarship audition session on Thursday evening. High school seniors and junior college students compete for three $1000 ACT Scholarships.


Friday and Saturday events culminate in an Awards Ceremony where trophies, plaques, medals, and other awards are presented to recognize outstanding work in technical categories and performance areas.

Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Jenny Massey

Mrs. Massey has been at Buckhorn High School for fifteen years. She earned her bachelors degree in English/Language Arts from UAH. She teaches AP English Language & Composition and English 11. She has taught 550 students in AP Language over the last six years, 269 of whom earned qualifying scores on the AP exam.


Mrs. Massey has been a National Board Certified Teacher since 2011. In 2012, she was selected as the JROTC Teacher of the Year. She has been a CollegeFirst presenter at UAH for three years. She is an A+College Ready Consultant, an NMSI/LTF Trainer, and is the owner of Massey Dance Productions.


She is married to Matt Massey, superintendent-elect for Madison County Schools. They have three children - Cooper, Tucker, and Jessie.


Congratulations Mrs. Massey!

Support Person of the Year

Mrs. Beth Countess

Mrs. Countess has been at Buckhorn since 1992 and has served as the school secretary since 1996. She is the glue that holds us all together and amazingly she does it with a smile, day in and day out. She received the BHS Good Samaritan Award in 1999-2000 and again in 2008-2009. She earned a Certificate of Appreciation from the Madison County Indian Education Program in 2008-2009, 2013-2014, and 2014-2015.


Mrs. Countess is active in the community and her church. She types and keeps records for her church's monthly dinners, helps with public relations duties, is responsible for purchasing, delivering, and organizing church supplies, and sings in the adult choir Christmas program.

Fall Brawl Wrestling Tournament - 2nd Place

Buckhorn Wrestling kicked off the 2014 season with Coach Barden's first Tournament as head wrestling coach at BHS!!!


The 9th Grade & Middle School wrestlers competed in the 2014 Fall Brawl Tournament. The team placed 2nd in the Tournament, while competing against 11 other area teams!

Individuals Placing in the Tournament:
- Stoney Childers placed 4th in the 95 lb. Division.
- Stone Barden placed 1st in the 103 lb. Division.
- Sean Parish placed 1st in the 119 lb. Division.
- Jordan Christian placed 4th in the 125 lb. Division.
- Jordan Hunter placed 1st in the 155 lb. Division.

A great start to what is going to be a GREAT SEASON!

Morgan Tipton Scores 28 Points!!

Buckhorn 52, James Clemens 30: Tipton leads Bucks past Jets

Senior Morgan Tipton scored 28 points to go with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead Buckhorn to a 52-30 win over visiting James Clemens.


Tipton was 3-for-8 on 3-point shots and scored 12 points in the third quarter as the Bucks (4-2) pulled away after holding a 21-14 halftime lead.

Bucks WIN the Scottsboro FNB Thanksgiving Tournament

Varsity Boys Basketball won the Scottsboro First National Bank Thanksgiving Tournament on Tuesday, November 26, 2014, with a 69-51 win over host, Scottsboro Wildcats!


Congratulations to Coach Jay Burney, Coach Jody Dodd, and the varsity boys basketball team! Go Bucks!! Buck Pride!!!

Mrs. Donna Kirkwood's transitional service students were hard at work serving teachers and administrators. The luncheon special was lasagna soup or chicken and dumplings!

Blue & Gold Wrestling Challenge Match

November 20, 2014

JROTC Food Drive

The second phase of the JROTC sponsored food drive for the Bobbie Odom Food Pantry, New Market United Methodist Church will begin Monday, December 1, 2014.


Students are asked to turn-in their canned and non-perishable food items to the teacher of their choice. JROTC Cadets will collect and count the food items every day or two during that teacher’s planning period. Teachers: Please separate the food items by block/class.


As of Monday, November 24th, the JROTC had collected a total of 2,056 canned and nonperishable food for the New Market United Methodist Church Food Pantry. Here are the standings as of Friday: Coach Reese’s 2nd Block Class is in first place with 278, Ms. Tran’s 1st Block is in 2nd place with 230, and Ms. Squire’s 2nd Block Class is in 3rd place with 159. Remember if a 1st block class wins, that class gets a free breakfast from Dr. Chumbley’s Culinary Class – paid for by JROTC. If a 2nd, 3rd or 4th block class wins JROTC will buy pizza and soft drinks for that class.


The JROTC will collect canned and nonperishable food items until December 15th. The competition ends on that day and the winning class will be declared. This food drive provides food for local families. Please help. We really need your support!

You and your family are invited to Cosmic Carols & Cocoa on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center! This event is included with paid museum admission or membership. Please join us in the Saturn V Hall between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to enjoy festive holiday music while decorating out-of-this-world cookies and creating festive holiday crafts. While you’re here, learn about the science behind snowflakes with our monthly Saturday Scientist presentation!


After creating your holiday masterpiece, grab a cup of hot cocoa and sit down with Mrs. Claus for a reading of The Polar Express. To top it off, add The Polar Express movie for only $5, playing in the Digital Theater at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at the door. Public Feedback Still Sought For Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards

There is still time to provide the Alabama State Department of Education with invaluable input on how the Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards can be improved.


Now through the week of December 15, 2014, the public can go to the Standards Review Homepage and offer feedback on each standard for English Language Arts and Mathematics by grade. Each week, standards for each grade are available for review and comment. While the 7th Grade review is featured this week, participants can still access all available review forms.


The purpose of the review is to help raise awareness of what the standards actually require students to learn and assist the ALSDE in strengthening the standards where needed. The department is working continually to ensure that all students graduate with the knowledge and skills they need for college and career, and parents, educators, business and industry, and civic leaders are critical to this effort.

2014 Speak-Up Survey

It is time for the annual SpeakUp Survey. The information gathered through this survey is used at both the system and state level for technology planning purposes. The data is also shared with legislators in the state of Alabama and at the national level. The SpeakUp Survey is open through December 19th.

BHS JROTC MEMORIAL PROJECT

As a result of the many generous donations, we have completed the Veterans Memorial Wall. The Memorial Wall honors all veterans, especially those from the New Market community and Madison County area.


We have received donations totaling over $16,000.00 in cash or material from Buckhorn High School, the Buckhorn High School Class of 2013, Buckhorn JROTC, District 1 Commissioner, Mr. Roger Jones, the Madison County Schools System, Jenkins Brick, Sequatchie Concrete, Alabama Flag & Banner, Clark Memorials & the First Baptist Church of New Market.

We still need your help:
We still need an additional $8,300.00 to finish paying for the bronze Branch/Service Seals, the bronze lettering for the memorial wall, and the red and tan pavers that surround the wall.


You can help:
Please click the link to access the Veterans Memorial (VM) Donor Form. Please print the form and mail your contribution to Buckhorn H.S. JROTC. With donations of $100.00 or more, we will engrave a red brick paver with your veteran loved one's name and other information you choose to put on the brick paver. These pavers will surround the base of the memorial.

Vanderbilt University’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions is preparing for the annual Vanderbilt Road Show. The Road Show travels to 48 cities across the country this August and September. Each 90-minute program typically features a media presentation led by Vanderbilt admissions officers, a question-and-answer session, and VU alumni, current students, or parents as guest speakers. Students will learn more about Vanderbilt’s unique campus, premier academic programs, the admissions process, and excellent financial aid programs. There are no applications necessary for consideration as all eligible students are automatically considered for these scholarships with the submission of the admission application. Are you a student who loves to help animals? P.L.A.Y. wants to hear your story!

To qualify: The contest is open to U.S. residents. No purchase necessary. All participants must be enrolled as full-time high school juniors or seniors. Entries are limited to one submission per person. Immediate family members of P.L.A.Y. employees are excluded from this contest. All essay submissions must be received by 11:59pm EST on Wednesday, December 3, 2014.

American Red Cross BloodStock Scholarship Challenge

-Blood Drive must be held between December 15 and January 15.

Alabama Student Grant Program

Program Overview:

The Alabama Student Grant Program is an award of grant assistance at an eligible independent Alabama college or university and is not based on need. Up to $1200 per academic year with maximum amount available only when sufficient funds are available.
Who may apply?
Undergraduate students--both half-time and full-time--who are Alabama residents attending Birmingham-Southern College, Concordia College, Faulkner University, Huntingdon College, Judson College, Miles College, Oakwood College, Samford University, Selma University, Southeastern Bible College, Southern Vocational College, Spring Hill College, Stillman College, and the University of Mobile.

A Few Reminders: Rules & Regulations

Parents, or individuals acting in that capacity, are responsible for seeing that each student under his/her care and control follows school system policy and local school rules and regulations. It is also the responsibility of parents to know such policies, rules and regulations.


Car Riders

Students are NOT allowed to walk to Winchester Road to get in a car after school. ALL cars must pull onto campus to safely pick up car riders. Students who do not follow this rule will be suspended, per Mr. Markham. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe.


Outside Food

Please remember that it is Buckhorn High School's Policy to NOT allow any outside food to be delivered to the school during regular school hours. (This policy does not apply to a 'brown bag' lunch that is prepared at home and brought to school by the student).

It is Buckhorn High School's policy to NOT allow student check-outs after 3:15 p.m.

Only custodial parent(s) will be allowed to check a student out of school, unless the custodial parent(s) has specifically designated someone else to check the student out of school. School officials will keep accurate records as to whom, what time, and for what reason students are checked out of school. [MCBOE 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 21 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]


Student Publications

The Board of Education authorizes school officials to allow students to have student sponsored publications within the school, and expects the administration to monitor such publications to the extent that disruptions do not result from the contents. Student publications are subject to and will be expected to meet standards associated with responsible journalism. The principal and student publication sponsor are responsible for the content of such publications.


Student publications not approved by the Principal are not allowed, and the Principal shall not allow distribution of publications without prior approval. A certified person shall be appointed to be responsible for supervising student publications, and shall report directly to the Principal in the production of such publications. Media Coverage of School Events

Occasionally local news media visit schools in Madison County to do special reports or follow up on certain news events. As a part of their coverage they often film certain aspects of the school.


It is the principal’s decision whether to allow news media to come into the schools and cover certain events. Extra precautions are taken when the media is covering a sensitive topic or event that might have a negative impact on the school, staff and students.


Parents who have concerns about their child possibly being filmed or photographed by the media should contact the principal. Principals will make every effort to accommodate the wishes of the parent, but it should be understood that it is very difficult to foresee every possible situation that might occur from media coverage of the schools and school events. Important Media Release Notification

This year, the Notice of Receipt encompasses all releases, including media coverage. In an effort to meet a parental request to NOT include your child's picture/name on any of our digital media platforms (i.e., the district/school websites, the Blue & Gold online newsletter, social media accounts, school broadcasts, online public service announcements, digital yearbook files, etc.), please complete the online form below, as soon as possible.

The building will open at 8:00 a.m.

8:00 a.m. - 8:25 a.m. The cafeteria is open for breakfast to all students.

8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. First Block

10:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Break

10:20 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. Second Block

11:55 a.m. - 1:55 p.m. Third Block

2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Fourth Block

3:15 p.m. is the latest time a student may be checked out.

The building will close at 4:00 p.m.


The building will be open on regularly scheduled school days from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Students arriving on campus before the first bell should be dropped off in the back of the building (near the big buck, 'Bucky') and report directly to the cafeteria. Students are not allowed to roam the building before the first bell. If a student needs to go to a teacher's room before the the first bell, arrangements must be made for a teacher to escort a student to his or her room. If a student is staying with a teacher after school, he/she must remain with the teacher until a parent or guardian picks him/her up. The building will close at 4:00 p.m. each day, so please make arrangements to have your child picked up before this time. *This does not include athletic practices/conditioning that require the use of the facilities.

2014-15 Madison County Schools' Calendar

Please be aware of the revisions that were made to this year’s calendar. This year's school calendar includes four half-days for professional development on September 26th, October 31st, February 13th, and April 17th. Students will attend the first half of the school day on each of these dates. Fall Break has returned this year and will be October 6th - 10th. We will also observe President’s Day on Monday, February 16, 2015. All other holidays/breaks remain the same as previous years.
