Grandfriends Day

April 12th is our annual invitation for Grandfriends to joins us for a brief concert and to see the students at school. We have a couple of requests of families to make sure this day runs smoothly:

  • We know Grandfriends are eager to get a good seat. Our concert will begin at 2:40 so we request that Grandfriends not arrive until 2:15.
  • With many guests at our building and some unfamiliar with our parking and traffic, please be patient during dismissal.
  • Provided weather is good, consider parking in the neighborhood or having your child walk home this day to help relieve some of the congestion.
  • IMPORTANT - If your child will be leaving with a Grandfriend, please complete the linked permission form and return with your child as soon as possible. This helps us know that all students will get home safely following this fun event.

STEAM

The next STEAM Club is open for registration! In this session, K-3 Students will explore STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Math) through hands-on activities that will promote creativity and problem-solving. This section requires no prior experience. Registration is open now until April 15. For registration and details on the required registration project visit https://sites.google.com/westside66.net/rbcodingclub. NSCAS Annual Testing for 3rd through 6th Grade

The second semester is an especially important time for our students as they focus their efforts and attention on school. Important assessments will be administered between March 25th and May 3rd. Your child’s teacher will have specific dates they will communicate when students are taking assessments.

The State Accountability Tests (NSCAS) are given to students in grades 3-6. Students are expected to read on grade level, problem solve, and respond to critical thinking questions. Families can access the Nebraska Department of Education Website at:

http://www.education.ne.gov/ to learn more about the assessments.

Simple things your family can do to support your child during these tests are:

  • Ensure a regular bedtime and plenty of rest.
  • Make sure students get breakfast in the morning either at home or at school. Our breakfast program begins serving at 8:15am.
  • Talk with your child about strategies they've learned to do well. Encourage them to do their best and to know that adults are proud of their efforts at school.

If either you or your child has additional questions please don't hesitate to ask your child's teacher or contact Mr. Higginbotham.

Counselor's Corner

In Classroom Guidance, students will be studying ways for children to stay safe. Along with the teachers, I will be teaching 1-2 lessons in the classrooms from HealthTeacher.com, curriculum provided to us by Children’s Hospital and Medical Center.

Kindergarten and 1st grade- Our objectives are to help students differentiate between a stranger and trusted adults, understand the importance of trusting their feelings when a situation isn’t right, and identify ways to communicate to protect personal safety.

2nd, 3rd, 4th grade- Our objectives are to help students identify strangers and trusted adults, describe feelings that may signal a dangerous situation, and identify ways to keep themselves safe.

5th and 6th grade- Students will review a fact sheet about child abuse and identify abusive situations and refusal techniques to help protect themselves.

I will begin teaching the lessons in mid-April. Please call or email if you have any questions.

Parking and Traffic Reminders for Pick Up and Drop Off

As a parent of a Rockbrook student, drop off and pickup are important routines to know about. Below is a list of procedures for parking, drop off, and dismissal. Following these procedures helps to promote safety and efficiency at these busy times of day. Thank you for your help in promoting the safety of our Rockbrook students and families.

7th Grade Requirements

Physicals and Immunizations

From our Middle School Nurse:

Nebraska law requires all students entering 7th grade to have a complete physical (also fulfills the requirements for a sports physical).

• For those playing sports, physicals must be performed after May 1st; for all others, examinations must be performed after March 1st.

• A Tdap booster given after 10 years of age prior to entering 7th grade is also required.

Please call your health care provider to schedule your child's physical and immunizations (call now—appointments fill up fast). Once completed, we ask that you turn in your completed physicals, along with immunizations,

to the ABC Building (909 S. 76th Street) before August 1st.

Please email questions to smith.melissaa@westside66.net.

Rockbrook Field Day

Field Day This year Field Day will be on May 17th (pardon our mistake in last week's communication). Our Student Council sponsors themed buddy activitys, including stations for fun and fitness, as well as a healthy snack. We feel adding some adult support will really help make for a fun set of afternoon stations that kids enjoy. We are looking for volunteers able to help. If interested please contact Mr. Higginbotham higginbotham.garret@westside66.net.

TAGG Challenge

Do you use TAGG? TAGG (Together A Greater Good) is a super easy way to support our school at many of the stores and restaurants you might be enjoying already. Download the TAGG App available for both iPhone and Android and add Rockbrook as a cause. Then, when you're out and about, use the app to see if the business gives back through TAGG.

Since Rockbrook registered, we've seen steady growth in the use of this easy way to raise money for the school. During the month of April, we'll be hosting our first Rockbrook TAGG Challenge. When families TAGG their purchases during April we'll keep track of the giving by class. What's more, the two classes with the top giving will receive a special surprise.

Check out our flyer here, and get ready. TAGG You're It!

Spring Into Math

During the month of April we'll be encouraging students to dig in on their math skills using our IXL online math system. Students may use IXL both at school and from home. If you need your child's login info, please check with your child's teacher. See below for further info.
