Reading
We are wrapping up our last week of our Fiction Unit. We have read many different fictional books, such as Please, Mr. Panda, Wave, A Balloon for Isabel, and The Lion Inside. When reading these books we focused on many different reading skills. Before reading each book, we discuss the title, author and illustrator. We also predict what might happen in the story based on the title and the illustrations on the cover. Students have also been asked to try to find the author and illustrator names on the cover of the book. During the reading, I ask students questions that require them to make predictions about what may happen next, make connections to the events in the story, or infer how the characters feel. We discuss these questions with our reading partner at the carpet. After reading these stories, we have continued to practice retelling the story by identifying the characters and setting as well as summarizing what happened first, next, then, after that, and last. Students have impressed me with their ability to answer many of these questions during their independent and partner reading!
Math
In math, we are transitioning from our Counting 0-10 Unit to our Counting 0-20 Unit. In finishing, counting 0-10 we spent some time practicing writing numbers 0-10 with dice games. We also got to subitize number 0-10 using ten frames. Ten frames help students continue to develop number sense as well as begin understanding addition and subtraction within ten. They showed their partner their ten frame, and their partner needed to explain what they show and how they quickly identified the number. Students were able to explain that I knew it was nine because I saw one counter was missing, or they stated that I knew it was seven because it was five on the top frame and two more on the bottom. We are eager to move into numbers 11-20 and discuss place value.
