Fall Assessments
As we begin our fall assessments, we wanted to shared that as part of our English Language Arts (ELA) assessments, you might notice a few changes.
It is critically important to maintain consistency in assessment protocols within schools and across districts. FCPS has updated the reading assessment in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The updated reading assessment provides: structures to make administration and scoring more consistent across teachers and the comprehension conversation rubric clearly defines the criteria for each comprehension score.
The new guidelines and rubric will enable your child’s teacher to sharpen his or her observation of reading behaviors and provide a comprehensive literacy experience that will move your child’s reading forward with intent and precision. As a result, the previous reading assessment in the spring of 2018 may result in a slightly higher score than in the updated reading assessment in the Fall of 2018.
We are looking forward to sharing lots of information with you at fall conferences.
If you have any concerns please contact Jacqueline.Cramer@fcps.org Whittier's Literacy Specialist.

Parent Volunteers/Visitors to the Building
This year, FCPS has introduced a new systematic visitor management system called Raptor. Raptor compares visitors to our school against national data bases from all 50 states to ensure the safety of our students. Visitors to our school may be asked to show identification before entering the building. Parents wishing to volunteer for school events, chaperone a party, or chaperone a field trip will still need to complete our Volunteer Training. We will offer volunteer training once a month. Our next training will be on Monday, November 19 at 6:00pm.
