The Lance
June 2-10
The mission of Lakeshore Middle School is to promote collaboration between educators, students, and families to foster engaged learners and active and compassionate
members of their community.
Reflections from Mr. Swegles
It is my hope that all of our stakeholders have learned from the opportunities presented to them during this time and that we will grow as people first and then students, parents, and professionals second. I know that has a parent, I've learned that my first grader doesn't care that his dad is a teacher, he still doesn't want to read or want help with story problems. I owe my wife a great deal of gratitude for taking on the majority of the teacher role at home. As an educator, this closure affirmed my knowledge that I thrive on being around people and I miss our students and staff terribly. Despite having all sorts of technology to stay connected at my fingertips, I prefer to be around people. I'm sure many of us do.
One more time, I send a heartfelt thank you for all that you have done to support us at LMS during this time by supporting your child at home. I am certain there were challenging days where patience and perseverance were more present than success and celebration. Teaching is the second hardest job in the world. Parenting is the first. I appreciate you.
8th Grade Honors and Recognition Night
Something new this year is that we will be recognizing ALL of our 8th graders with one image. I have asked them to send me a picture they would like displayed or to use their yearbook photo. I have had a great response to this request so ask your child if they have sent me their photo, yet. Video is in the work and June 3 at 8:00pm

6th-yellow loop (bus loop, front/main entrance)
7th-red loop
8th-white loop
When you drive into your grade level loop, please, stay in your vehicle. We will take your name and a staff member will bring the items to you in your car.
If you have items that belong to LMS and need to be returned, we ask that you bring them in a bag to hand to one of the school officials that will be outside. If it is not clear who the item needs to be returned to, please, attach a sticky note with the teacher’s name on it to the item so we can get it back to the proper person.
As a reminder, 6th - 8th-grade students will be keeping their Chromebooks and chargers this summer.
Only Lakeshore Public Schools employees may enter the building during designated periods. Family members, friends, and non-employee community members are NOT permitted to enter the building at any time.
If at any time over the next two weeks you have a specific safety or health concern related to picking up materials, please let one of your principals know via email, and we will make arrangements to collect your items.

Time Capsule: Friday, June 5 is deadline until fall
June 5 will be the last day to turn in your time capsule items before the summer. Students and families will have an opportunity to turn in items in the fall as well.
If your child, or you, wish to turn in time capsule documents now, you may do so by placing them in the tub outside the front doors of the middle school. There are envelopes in the tub if you need one. This is such a unique opportunity to reflect and record our thoughts that we want to make sure you have the opportunity to do that now and turn it in. There will still be an opportunity to turn it in, come fall, should you chose.
The students in the 8th grade Language Arts classes are creating a personal time capsule that will be delivered to them in May of their senior year. Would you like to surprise your child with a letter in the time capsule? Letters may be written by parents, grandparents, siblings, etc. The content of the letter is up to you, but the students will reflect on the following categories in their writing: me, my world, people in my life, my past, what I do, my future. You can mail your letter to Lakeshore Middle School with attention to Laura Veldman. Please be sure to include your student’s first and last name in the letter. This is an optional activity to enrich the project, but we know your child will appreciate reading your writing. The letter should be mailed to LMS by the time school starts next fall. Thank you for your cooperation in this project.
Pass/Incomplete: Update June 2
Update June 2: June 10 at 10:00 will be the cut off for work to be turned in. Students should email their teachers if they have turned in missing work to ensure that teachers are aware.
As were near the end of quarter 4, a reminder that students will earn a Pass or an Incomplete. This will be determined by their "good faith effort". In our Continuation of Learning plan, the district has defined a “good faith effort” as an attempt to complete assigned work as accurately as possible given the availability of little or no direct instruction, as this is a new and unprecedented set of circumstances. Students earning an Incomplete will be provided a window of opportunity to make up any missing work in order to achieve a Pass for the quarter.
