A.L.I.C.E Response Training
Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate
Dear Wolverine Families,
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District has been working with Local Law Enforcement to promote student safety. Through a borough-wide coalition we are training all staff and students on how to respond in the unlikely event of an active threat during school hours.
Schools account for the developmental needs of students by tailoring lessons to be age appropriate and delivered by staff familiar with the students social, emotional and developmental abilities. Staff also work to ensure that students who require accommodations are cared for during practice drills and in case of a real emergency.
The active threat response program adopted by our community use the following strategies: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate, commonly referred to as ALICE. These strategies combine to create effective and flexible action steps for students and staff to take in order to increase their safety during an active threat in a school building. The main objective of this program is to provide students and staff with options to increase their chance of survival during an active threat emergency. The ALICE initiative is recognized across the country as an additional component to the traditional “lockdown” response.
Ryan Middle School staff will begin ALICE introductions to students on December 7th and continue scenario conversations through the spring semester. Our initial presentation to students will be delivered by our ALICE team of staff members. Scenarios and further conversations will be continued in classes by individual teachers practicing carefully selected scenarios, which will lead to a practical understanding of the safety options provided by ALICE. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call with questions.
As always, thank you for your support!
