HES Shark Scoop
January 13, 2023
From Principal Cutone
Dear HES Families,
As I shared with you at the beginning of the year, it is our mission at HES to ensure that every single Shark knows that they matter, that they belong, and that they are loved. As a staff, this guides our interactions with students every day all day.
This week, we began our second session of after school clubs, which are one of the most exciting parts of our school life. The clubs are a beautiful opportunity for nurturing that sense of belonging, as children play and make friends with Sharks from other classrooms and even other grades. One barrier that keeps us from offering a fun club opportunity to every Shark each session is the limited spots available, which is reliant upon the number of adults who are available to run clubs. I am so grateful to the staff members, parents, and other community members who run clubs, and I encourage anyone who has a special interest or talent to consider running a club next session.
I hope that you have a wonderful long weekend dedicated to remembering the life of the great Civil Rights Leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As always, please let me know how I can support you and your family.
Warm regards,
Christie

Queridas famílias do HES,
Atenciosamente,
Christie

Ruby Bridges
On November 14, 1960, Ruby Bridges became a symbol of the U.S. civil rights movement. She was just 6 years old. Her simple act of going to an all-white school marked the beginning of integration for U.S. public schools. Bridges was born in Tylertown, Mississippi, on September 8, 1954.

Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was born into northern slavery in Maryland in 1820 and her sense of independence led her to escape in 1849. She devoted her life to helping rescue other slaves, including her own family and non-family members. She worked with the ‘Underground Railroad’ which included hidden routes and homes to let escaped slaves move from location to location, offering food, shelter and clothes as they headed to freedom.
