Diversity & Equity Newsletter

December 2020

December is Universal Human Rights Month

Started in 1948 when the United Nations wrote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this month is a time for people around the world to join together to ensure human rights and dignity for all people. During this time home and with family, think about ways that we can ensure this for those in our community and around the world. Take some time and read a book, blog post, social media tag, or watch a video about finding common ground with people different from us.

DIVERSITY & EQUITY COMMITTEE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Every month this year we will be spotlighting a different member of the Diversity & Equity Committee. In this space they will be able to talk about what they do at ASUA, why they are on the committee, and what they like to do in their free time!

This month's spotlight is Sam Morris.

Big picture

Hi there everybody – I’m Sam, I use he/his pronouns.

This is my 5th year working as an instructional assistant here at ASUA. Working directly with the students in the classroom on a daily basis has been a true joy for me. I have seen them all grow and mature so much and I have continued to grow personally and professionally right alongside them. Outside of ASUA, I am working on getting my Master’s in Education and preparing for a career as a social studies teacher. As I get ready to begin the next chapter in my career, away from ASUA, I have been reflecting a lot about how much this community means to me. I feel so lucky to have been a part of such an amazing place.

Although I am moving on professionally, I am very excited and hopeful for ASUA’s future as it continues to forge ahead as a trailblazer in the world of autism education. Just one example of the many amazing strides that ASUA is taking this year is in the establishment of the Diversity and Equity committee, which I am honored to be a part of. The committee’s mission, to help make our community -and the world - a more inclusive and equitable place for all, embodies the core values that ASUA stands for. I am very proud of the work that the committee has undertaken in its nascent existence and am eagerly anticipating its future endeavors as it continues to be a force for positive change on both a micro and macro scale.
