The Buzz at Westbrook
January 10, 2020
From the Principal...
Dear Westbrook Families,
Happy New Year! We hope you were able to spend some time reading, playing, tinkering, laughing, and spending time together as a family over break. We are so happy to be back together with our school family!
Enrollment for Kindergarten and Circle of Friends
Enrollment for Kindergarten and Circle of Friends will begin in January! More information about the enrollment process can be found below or on our school website.
Hot Reads!
We had our first HOT READS Assembly! At a Hot Reads assembly, each staff member brings one of their favorite books to share with the school. The names of teachers are placed in a bowl, and one lucky winner gets to read to the school! Teachers adore sharing our love for books with the anticipation of maybe getting picked to share our favorite book with the school! At our first assembly, Mrs. Stortz, our technology facilitator, was the lucky one who got picked to read Giraffes Don't Dance!
Staff Book Study: Conscious Discipline
At our last staff meeting, we continued our discussion of Conscious Discipline. This month, our staff read about helping students set limits respectfully and building the school family.
One thing that we discussed from the book was the skill of noticing. Noticing helps us be present with children and build relationships as we encourage helpfulness in our students.
Here are the steps described by Dr. Becky Bailey:
Start by using the child’s name or the pronoun “you.”
Next, describe in detail what the child did that was helpful.
Help the child understand how that behavior helped someone else.
Finally, end the description with a tag such as “that was helpful” or “that was thoughtful.”

A Note from the Nurse...
Keep Flu Out of School
Vaccines are among the safest and most cost-effective ways to prevent disease. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body to develop an immune response to fight the flu. Protecting children from the flu will help keep them healthy and in school. Contact your child’s health provider about receiving the flu vaccine. How Can I Tell if my Child has Influenza (Flu)?
Influenza typically comes on very suddenly. The symptoms usually include high fever, aches, chills, headache, cough, and extreme tiredness. Children, especially infants and toddlers, may have additional symptoms that adults usually don’t experience, including ear aches, nausea, and vomiting. (National Foundation for Infectious Diseases)
