After spending a week researching how other countries celebrate Christmas, our 3rd graders created a project that represented what they learned. The students gathered in the cafeteria to share their amazing projects with their parents and the students of Gunter Elementary. We are so proud of their hard work and creativity.

GMS NOVEMBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to the GMS December Students of the Month!
Rylee Watson β 5th Grade
Ryle plays volleyball, basketball and softball. Her favorite subject in school is science. She loves to spend time with family and listen to Morgan Wallen. Her future ambition includes winning a State Volleyball trophy!
Levi Coleman β 6th Grade
Levi plays football and basketball. In school, he loves his math class! When he is not in school, he likes to play sports and go fishing. He also loves to listen to Post Malone. His future ambition is to become a professional bass fisherman.
Sofia Pina-Lowery β 7th Grade
Sofia plays volleyball, runs track, and is in the GMS Band. Her favorite subject is math. When sheβs not in school, Sofia likes to play with her brother and dabble in arts and crafts. Her favorite musician is Stave Lacey, and as her future ambition, she would love to spend some time traveling in Hawaii.
Blake Hale β 8th Grade
Blake plays football and basketball, he is a member of the GMS Band and is involved in GMS Musical Theatre. He is a member of the One Act Play that took 1st Place in competition this month. Blake loves science, itβs his favorite class in school. When he finds time to do something other than school clubs and sports, he loves to hunt and fish. Blake's favorite artists are Morgan Wallen and George Strait. His future ambition is to become a Sports Manager/Marketer.
Gunter Middle School Spelling Bee
Congratulations to Hailey Blanks (Champion) and Corbin Waligura (Alternate) as our GMS Spelling Bee winners!
Hailey's winning word was "donkeys".
Fun and Learning in Geometry
In Ms. Reevesβ Geometry class students have learned about congruent figures and congruence transformations. Students were to use their knowledge to create a unique shape from a 3 inch square. They would translate, reflect or rotate the image across their poster to create a tessellation. A tessellation or tiling is the covering of a surface, often a plane, using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps.
Robotics STATE Competition
The Gunter Robotics team headed off to the State competition in December to compete against 71 other teams from around the great State of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
Upon arrival, each team was guaranteed a 30 minute practice slot. Senior, Gray McDowell, noticed that many teams had not yet arrived and time slots were not used, so he used his Tiger leadership skills and was able to get 5 more slots for our team to use for that day and 3 for the day of competition. (Good thinking, Gray!)
The day of competition proved to be a busy experience for all! 12 teams competed at the same time using 3 fields of play, each holding 4 tracks. Gunter, the smallest team in the competition placed in the top 20% and advanced to the Semifinal Round. The team did not make the Final round, but came so close! They missed it by only 2 slots which calculated out to less than 10 points.
The Tigers learned that at this level of play, several things might factor in that are beyond their control, such as losing communication between the robot and the controller due to the overload of WiFi users on the network. All of the teams were experiencing 5-10 second drops in communication, which is huge when you are competing against each other. Hopefully in the future, the leaders of the competition can create an environment where the robots are on a separate WiFi signal than all of the people present at the event.
In the end, Gunter placed 16th overall, and 4th in our Division. We are super proud of these kids and this accomplishment! We would like to send a special thank you to Trenton ISD and Bonham ISD for graciously offering their course for the team to practice on as Gunter does not have a course of their own yet. We also want to send a shout out to the Gunter team for their awesome sportsmanship by staying after the competition to help dismantle the playing field, remove banners, and stack the tables and chairs; they were the only team who did that :)
Thank you for representing Gunter ISD is such a great way!

One Act Play Champs!
GMS Theatre students were excited to perform "The Girl In The White Pinafore" by Jiggs Burgess at UIL One Act Play competition. The play is based on the true story of what remains the worst school disaster in our nation's history. On that fateful day in 1937, an undetected natural gas leak caused a brand new school in New London, Texas to explode killing nearly 300 students and teachers. The events of that day lead to the passing of legislation requiring the odorization of natural gas.
Our cast and crew were phenomenal! They took home the 1st Place Trophy!

Audrey McGaughey - Top Performer
Hannah Smith - Top Performer
Caleb Siler - All Star Cast
Tyler Woods - Honorable Mention All Star Cast

ONCE A TIGER, ALWAYS A TIGER!
More than 80 years ago this young man played football for Gunter High School. On December 16th at 97 3/4 years old, Raymond Owen put on his original letter sweater and headed to AT&T Stadium to the State Championship game to cheer on his Alma Mater! We are sure he was the oldest former Gunter football player in attendance. Heβs just 3 months shy of 100!
He was interviewed by KTEN News, and said he would be there next year, "Lord willing," if the Tigers return to State. Read the story right here! https://www.kten.com/story/48031921/raymond-owen-still-cheering-on-gunter-football-80-years-later

Graduation Date Change - Mark your calendar!
Graduation is a special time for our seniors, and we canβt think of a more special place to have the graduation than our own Tiger Field. To make that happen, we have decided to change the 2023 Graduation date to Thursday, May 25th at 8:00 PM. Making this change gives us the opportunity to make alternative plans in case the weather does not cooperate.
Our new plan looks like this:
- Graduation - Thursday, May 25th | 8:00 PM
- In the event of inclement weather on Thursday, Graduation will be held on Friday, May 26th at 9:00 AM
- If bad weather persists throughout both days, Graduation will be moved into the GHS Event Center (Main Gymnasium) and held Friday morning at 10:00 AM. If we have to move the ceremony inside, seating will be limited. Each graduate will be given 10 tickets for family/friends.
We are looking forward to making this event as special as we can for the Class of 2023.
