Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Summer Term 2 - Issue 6

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom.

Wow! What a week!

Firstly, thank you to our wonderful Friends of Hungate who put on a wonderful Summer Fair with the help of the children and staff. I'm sure you will agree that this year's fair was fabulous and we managed to raise almost £1500 for the school. Personally, I love it despite being absolutely drenched by sponges at the 'splat the teacher' stand. I know who everyone of you were who landed a sponge on my nose! Watch out!

Secondly, the KS2 SATs results came back this week and we are absolutely delighted with them. Here they are:

Reading - 92% (75% National Average)

Writing - 77% (78% National Average)

Maths - 96% (76% National Average)

Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling - 92% (78% National Average)

Thank you to all the staff who work hard with our wonderful year six children to produce the best results seen at Sherburn Hungate. I am so proud of each and everyone of our children and wish them all the very best for next week at high school.

Finally, we can also celebrate our attendance. This year, our attendance is 96.4%. This is above the national average and above last year's figure. Well done everyone. Let's build on it next year.

Enjoy the weekend. It's going to be a warm one and let's hope that England can snatch the third place medal in the world cup.

RWM Combined - 77% (64% National Average)

How the SATs compare to previous years

A final farewell to Year 6

We have received news from Sherburn High School that our year six children are to report there on Monday morning to complete their final week of the term. Additionally, they asked that we let our year six parent group know that they will finish at lunchtime on Friday for the summer.

Tuesday 17th July - Class Transition Afternoon Information

On Tuesday afternoon, our new teachers (Mr Browning and Mr Kelly) together with other members of staff will meet their new classes formally for the first time. They all have a range of exciting activities planned and I'm sure it will go well.

Children will exit school from the classroom where they will leave in September.

If your child is currently in Reception (Miss Ball), they will leave from the Year 1 door with Miss Horner.

If your child is currently in Year 1 (Mrs Robertson), they will leave from the Year 2 door with Miss Smith.

If your child is currently in Year 2 (Mrs Butterfield), they will leave from the Year 3 door with Mrs Butterfield.

If your child is currently in Year 3 (Miss Green), they will leave from the same door with Mr Browning.

If your child is currently in Year 4 (Miss Smith), they will leave from the Year 5 door with Mr Kelly.

If your child is currently in Year 5 (Miss Mackay), they will leave from the same door with Miss Mackay.

School Meal Information

I have to inform you that from September the cost of a child's school meal with rise to £2.30 per day (£11.50/week). While this is a weekly increase of £1.00 it is a necessary step to ensure our school meals remain value for money. Our Key Stage One children (Reception to Year 2) will continue to receive free school meals.

Next week, there is also a slight change of menu. On Thursday, Pizza will be served instead of Chicken Fajitas.

I would also kindly like to remind you that school meals will need to be paid up to the end of term. Thank you.

School Closed - Afternoon of Wednesday 18th July

If you didn't receive it, I sent a letter to all parents/carers recently regarding our afternoon closure on Wednesday 18th July from 1315. As I mentioned in the letter, we need the time to complete vital whole staff training on Mathematics, ready for September. We do appreciate the inconvenience this may cause but hope that the early notice will negate any child care issues which may arise.

It's worth pointing out that 'Buddies', our on-site child care provider will be able to take a limited number of children on this afternoon. If this is something you are interested in, please see the contact details at the bottom of this newsletter.

Nursery Applications for September 2018

Just a quick note to let you know we will be allocating places for our Nursery session for September 2018 very shortly. If you would like a place, please contact the school office.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Reception children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 99.1%!

Our average attendance this week is 96.3%. We're above the national expectations!

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.
