SHS Restart and Recovery Plan
August 2020 Community Update
#SpartanStrong
Overview:
Our Sparta High School and District level Restart and Recovery teams have been working hard to create a Restart and Recovery plan that is consistent with NJDOE, CDC, state and local guidance while considering the health, safety, academic, and social-emotional needs of our students and staff. As we continue to adjust and adapt based on continuing changes from the state and other agencies, we want to make sure that you are aware that we are working hard to plan for any and all scenarios so that we are proactive in our approach to reopening our school. Please note that this is our plan as of early August and that there is a possibility that things may change at any time. At this current time, we have created a hybrid approach that focuses on the physical, social and emotional health of our students while maximizing instructional time and supports. We are also prepared to transition to an all-virtual platform in the event that we are quickly required to close our school.
Breakdown of Cohorts and Alternating Week Scheduling Notes:
Here are some specific items of note regarding the organization and infrastructure behind our SHS Restart and Recovery plan schedule:
Students will alphabetically be broken into two cohorts (A & B) by last name.
Last names A-K will be enrolled in cohort A (designated above in Carolina Blue).
Last names L-Z will be part of cohort B (designated above in Navy Blue).
The two cohorts will alternate weeks in school - while cohort A is in school, cohort B will be following the daily class schedule virtually and participating in class instruction via live stream.
In order for teachers to meet with all of their students to review class procedures and processes, as well as ensure that students have necessary instructional resources, each cohort will have two days of in-person instruction the first week of school.
If there are any questions or concerns regarding your child's schedule please contact his/her guidance counselor.
Daily Schedule:
Our student class schedule will follow early dismissal hours every day of the week. Daily instructional lessons will be provided during shortened schedules. No lunch will be served, and Grab and go meals will be available.
Classes will begin at 7:22 a.m. and students will be dismissed for the day at 12:00 p.m.
Classes will have a duration of 64 minutes from Monday through Thursday.
Classes will meet in the following order:
Monday & Wednesday: Periods 1-4
Tuesday & Thursday: Periods 5-8
Classes will have a duration of 30 minutes on Friday and students will attend all 8 classes in order to have time with all teachers before transitioning into the next cohort week.
Teachers will have virtual student Academic Assistance hours at the end of the school day in order to address individual needs as students and staff navigate both in-person and virtual instruction.
Instructional Items to Note:
Daily live lessons will be provided and students are required to follow class schedules and attend class meetings. Class lessons will be interactive and will take multiple forms including modeling, mini-lessons, screencast Google Slides, small group projects, project-based learning with benchmarks, etc.
All class lessons will be livestreamed to students participating virtually. Google Meet is the primary platform for class lessons and Academic Assistance hours.
Students are expected to be active participants in all live lessons, whether attending in-person or virtually.
Our Genesis Parent Portal Gradebook will be open to parents throughout the day.
Attendance is required for all in-person and virtual instruction. Attendance will be taken daily and during each class and will be recorded in Genesis.
Students who are ill but are scheduled to be in school can join the cohort at home and follow the daily class schedule.
Students at home, including students who opt for the all virtual learning option, will follow the same schedule as students in class and join Google Meet sessions for their coursework.
Students will be required to follow a virtual Code of Conduct.
If students opt for all-virtual learning, they will not be permitted to switch back to the hybrid option until December 9th.
Health and Safety Protocol
Social Emotional Learning will be a focus as we transition back into learning through the ALIGN program and other resources.
Parents will be required to fill out a weekly screening form at the start of the school week via Genesis Parent Portal. Students will not be permitted to attend classes without a completed screening form.
Students with potential symptoms should stay home and attend school virtually.
Masks will be required on buses and in school buildings by all staff, students, and visitors. Most recent state regulations prohibit mask breaks during the school day.
We are increasing our signage and procedures are being developed to address classroom changes, passing time, bathroom use, and sanitizing all building areas.
All classrooms will be furnished with hand sanitizer stations.
