Welcome to the Lime Team!
Open House Night
Welcome to the 6th Grade Lime Team!
Open House Night is looking a little differently this year at Fuller, however, we are excited to share with you what our amazing students will be learning this year in their classes. We appreciate all the support and enthusiasm we have received so far this school year and look forward to continue these collaborative relationships to ensure a happy and successful year!
Geography Curriculum
Hello! My name is Molly Dunne and I am the Lime Social Studies/World Geography and Cultures teacher. I have been teaching at Fuller since 2012 and am so excited to get to know and teach the Lime Students. This year our main focus is geography and cultures. We will be moving through different continents focusing on the physical and human geography of each area. Students will be completing many different types of projects, readings and activities to support their learning. Here is a copy of the 6th Grade Curriculum.
Essential Questions:
In what ways and to what extent does geography shape human experience? In what ways and to what extent does human activity shape geography?
To achieve this goal, students will be studying:
Introduction to Geography
Central America, South America, Caribbean
Africa and A Long Walk To Water
Europe: Conflict and Collaboration
East, Central & South Asia
Southeast Asia & Oceania
Arabia/SW Asia World Religions
Science Curriculum
The Lime Team Science Students will be diving into science with both feet. They will be learning all about four domains of science. Within those four domains we will focus on astronomy, geology, cells, human body systems, physics and some chemistry to name a few. With the help of technology we will be able to work together on group projects and participate in lab activities using interactive demonstrations. The students are sure to have an exciting experience in their science classes with as many hands on opportunities as I can provide.
I have high expectations for all students as I prepare them for their middle school time. My motto is: No Excuses, No Exceptions – Expect Excellence. This means that I expect all of my students to give school their best effort and to challenge themselves during this very important year. I have confidence that all Lime Team students will be successful 6th graders. The Lime Team teachers are committed to making sure everyone on the team feels safe and comfortable at school so that they can achieve great things. We believe that everyone must be respectful towards all in order to promote a positive school climate.
On the Lime Team we believe in the Fuller Middle School Core Values: Respect, Responsibility, and Results.
We appreciate the support and dedication of our parents, guardians, and students.
Math Curriculum
Hello and welcome to sixth grade math!
My name is Joanne Summers, the Lime Team math teacher.
This is what I look like on Zoom each day for your children!
We began the school year learning and practicing 2 important math routines: “3-reads” and “think-share-compare.” These routines provide strategies for problem-solving, but more importantly they enhance communication and collaboration among students. Ask your child to tell you about these strategies!
In sixth grade, we will use 3-reads and think-share-compare all year as we study:
ratios, proportions, and percents
the number system, dividing with fractions, and operations involving decimals
numerical and algebraic expressions (no equal sign), recognizing equivalent expressions, solving equations (yes equal sign)
geometry, area of polygons, and volume
statistics and probability
While we are learning remotely, students will work independently and in small group “breakout rooms” to complete math lessons and activities. For the most part, all assignments will be submitted through Canvas, our online learning system. I will not assign frequent homework, but my expectation is that if students don’t finish their work during class, they will finish and submit it sometime that same day. This could be considered their “homework.”
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you!
English Language Arts Curriculum
What is Language Arts? What happens in Language Arts, and why is it important? Language Arts is exactly what it sounds like, the study of language and its many forms and uses. Language is a powerful tool. We use it to express ideas and to interpret the ideas of others. It can take the form of a speech or a poem, a novel or a news article.
Essentially, Language Arts is about communication. Throughout this year, students will learn how to communicate ideas effectively when writing or speaking, and to understand the ideas communicated by others. They will develop strategies to read and analyze challenging texts and respond to these texts in writing. These skills will prepare them to take on the challenging work expected of them in the future.
We will explore three major units in Language Arts this year. Our first unit is a study of folktales. Students will learn some common characteristics and themes of folktales, read a variety of folktales from around the world, analyze them for those common folktale elements, and as a culminating assignment, write their own folktale.
The second unit this year is centered around the historical fiction text, Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. Students will learn the elements of fiction, analyze how setting, character, and plot interact, and how the main character develops over the course of the story.
Our final unit is a poetry study. Students will learn common poetic techniques, structures, and themes, read and write a variety of poems, and hopefully develop an appreciation of how poetry can deliver a powerful message in a compact form.
We have exciting work ahead, and I’m looking forward to digging deeper into these units with our students this year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Guided Academics Curriculum
My name is Nikole Racicot and I am so excited to be joining the Lime Team. This year I will be working with Ms. Summers and Ms. Wilfert to provide inclusion support through. a co-teaching model. I will also be teaching the Guided Academics class!
Students in Ms. Racicot's Guided Academics class will have the opportunity to explore all the different content areas of math, language arts, science, and social studies!
This class allows students time to explore their own learning and interests. We are able to dig deeper into our other core classes and practice to improve our basic skills. We also have the opportunity to learn important study and organization skills that will help us in our futures. In our class, we work hard and have fun!
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
