What Are We Learning This Week?
At home, your student should continue to practice reading for at least 20-30 min. 5 days a week. Now that Pine Tree has started, students can focus on getting books for the Sheiko iCenter or the public library. After they read, please encourage them to color in their December Reading log. The December log is due on Monday, Jan. 6 when we return from break. A January log will come home next week.
Writing: This week is all about final editing and changes for the final draft. All narrative final drafts are due by Friday. This will be the one that I grade.
Spelling: We are heading into unit 14 in spelling. The concept this week is on the ou/ow sound like in flower or house. There is a take home task on Thursday, and a test on Friday. Students should be studying their words each week.
Math: The class is working hard on our fractions unit. This is not an easy concept, so we are taking it slowly to ensure understanding. Equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, adding and subtracting fractions will be the big ideas this week. There are two practice homework pages to work on this week to help students with these concepts. They are to use their fraction strips, egg carton sheets, geo board sheets, and any notes to help them.
Science: Our Energy unit came to an end with our unit test. Next week, we begin our new unit on soil, rocks and landforms. A family letter will come home for you to better understand the concepts. Students will be studying different soil types next week and make observations of it by using characteristics to describe them. All notes will be done in their science notebook this unit instead of a packet.
Social Studies: All students were given a chapter 3 review on the peopling of the USA. Some questions pertain to the immigration of people to Michigan as well. Students have been told they can take a book home to study. They should also use their notes in their soc. stu. divider: guided reading notes, peopling chart, and moving to Michigan packet. They may also access the book on-line at https://student.teachtci.com/student/sign_in my email address is tiffaney.emert@wbsd.org. Then, students put in their last name and first name initial. The password is 123456. Ex. Student name John Wilson. User name = wilsonj.
