Dear Henderson Families,
Let’s Welcome November, A Month Filled With Gratitude! November is an enjoyable time as we get to spend precious moments with family and friends and reflect upon our many blessings. I am thankful for receiving an opportunity to lead Henderson Middle School. Just like all schools, we have our challenges, but Henderson Middle School has great things to celebrate as well. We have accomplished students who come to school each and everyday ready to learn and work hard in their classrooms, we have educators/ staff who go above and beyond to show students how much they care and value them, and we have special programs such as Eastlab, Broadcast Journalism, Choir, Sports and Athletics, where students shine. We are seeing an increase in positive student behavior through our Positive Behaviors Incentive Program (PBIS). I couldn’t be any prouder of our students and staff. I am also enjoying the leadership of our students when they step up and act as role-models when their peers are not doing their part. These are just a few of our celebrations in the early part of the year and I look forward to more successes as the year progresses!
We have just completed first quarter of the school year. All students and families should have received report cards. Please notify our school registrar if you need a copy of your child’s report card. The school report card provides information on how students perform from quarter to quarter. Please take time to review the report card with child and celebrate successes or set goals for improvement for second quarter. Below are a few tips in supporting your child as we dive deeper into the second quarter of the year. https://childrensupportsolutions.com/report-cards/
Keep things in perspective. Remind yourself that a report card provides a snapshot of information about your child’s performance over a particular period of time—a period of time that is now well in the past. It doesn’t have to predict the future.
Talk to your child about how he/she is feeling. Take time to really hear what your child is saying. Let her/him know that his/her feelings make sense—and, when she/he is ready to shift into problem-solving mode, help him/her to identify possible solutions. Does he/she need help figuring how to organize her/his school materials and to keep track of important deadlines? Would he/she benefit from a little extra tutoring in a particular subject area? What would make her/his life better and less stressful at school?
Express your confidence in your child. Let him/her know that you have faith in her/his ability to come up with solutions for dealing with the particular challenges he/she is facing at school. At the same time, make sure that your child understands that she/he doesn’t have to deal with these challenges on his/her own. He/she can count on you and other caring adults for support.
In recent newsletters, we have shared two of our main school-wide goals in addition to academics is improving school attendance and decreasing student behavior infractions. We have been meeting with individual students to set up attendance contracts for those that are chronically truant (missing 10 or more days of school). We are happy to report that fighting infractions are decreasing, but we need this behavior eliminated. We will continue to counsel our students on how to engage in positive solution solving techniques, but in the meantime, you may support our school by reinforcing this type of conversation with your child. Thanks for your support on these important matters.
Sincerely,
Principal Yaa Appiah-McNulty

Send Your Child to School Ready to Learn
https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/school-help-middle.html
A nutritious breakfast fuels up middle schoolers and gets them ready for the day. In general, preteens and teens who eat breakfast have more energy and do better in school.
You can help boost your child's attention span, concentration, and memory by providing breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein, as well as low in added sugar. If your child is running late some mornings, send along fresh fruit, nuts, yogurt, or a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Many schools provide nutritious breakfast options before the first bell.
Preteens and teens also need the right amount of sleep to be alert and ready to learn all day. In general, preteens need about 10 to 12 hours of sleep each night and teens need about 8½ to 9½ hours.
Bedtime difficulties can arise at this age for a variety of reasons. Homework, sports, after-school activities, texting, TVs, computers, and video games, as well as hectic family schedules, can contribute to students not getting enough sleep. Also try to prevent kids from napping after school to ensure they can fall asleep at an appropriate time each night.
Lack of sleep can make it difficult for preteens and teens to pay attention in school. It's important to have a consistent bedtime routine, especially on school nights.
