Kindergarten & 1st Grade

This month, students will be delving into The Incredible 5-Point Scale. This scale ranges from 1-5 with each number representing the level of their emotions. 1 = Calm. Ready to work and gradually works its way up to 5 = Very angry/Out of control. Students will be learning what each number means and how to recognize which level they are at throughout the day. As they learn about the Incredible 5-Point Scale we will also be practicing different ways to calm down the emotions back to 1= Calm. Below is a visual of The Incredible 5-Point Scale.

2nd & 3rd Grade

Students have learned how to recognize the emotions of others by looking at their face, body, and the situation. Knowing what to look at will help them become more aware of others and have empathy for them. This month, students are learning how to figure out how they are feeling. Students will learn about the different physical changes that happen to their bodies when their emotions become strong. Examples of these are a stomach ache when worried, a racing heart beat, sweaty hands, a rise in body temperature and many others. As they learn about themselves, they begin to learn about their brain. Through the Hand Model of the Brain, students view their thumb as the emotional part of their brain and their fingers as the thinking/problem solving part of their brain that wrap around their thumb. They will learn how they need to work together and that when we are only using the emotional part of our brain, we do not always make the wisest or safest of choices.
