Today our traditional friends started back to school. If you have questions about your child's bus ridership experience, please contact WCPSS Transportation. We are also happy to serve as a support to our community, but we operate separately from the Transportation Department. Please make sure your child knows how they are getting home and communicate changes through our red folder system.
Friday, September 2nd is an Early Release Day. Students will be dismissed from school at 1:45 pm. Monday, September 5th is Labor Day Holiday-No School.
MTYR Calendar Updates: The WCPSS Board of Education approved a few calendar changes for this year. Students will not have school on election day, November 8th or on Juneteenth, June 19th. More information can be found here: Year-round Changes

STEM Updates
1st Grade - 5th Grade Parents,
Please make sure that you keep track of your child's Chromebook charger. We have had to replace several of them since the beginning of the school year. If it's not labelled with your child's name on it, please either do that or have your child's teacher do that for them. It's best practice to have a consistent place where your child charges the Chromebook every night so that is always ready to go the next day. If your Chromebook does not work, you can contact the help desk - helpdesk@wcpss.net or bring it to Ms. Trent or Mrs. LeSueur to turn it in to be fixed by the help desk.
I have switched from Google Classroom to Canvas! If you want to see what your child(ren) are doing in STEM or want some great educational websites for them, join as an observer! Here is all the information you need to become an observer. Here is a video on how your child can get the pairing code for you to join.
We need more recycled materials!
- Plastic bottle tops (Milk, drinks, water)
- Plastic bottles
- Cardboard tubes (TP or Paper towel rolls)
- Small boxes of all shapes and sizes.
- Twist ties from bread
- Metal cans with no sharp edges
AIG Fall 2022 Nominations
Dear LPES Families,
It's that time of year when we accept Academically and Intellectually Gifted nominations from classroom teachers and parents! This is a time that we ask you to really reflect and determine if higher-level differentiation is needed for your student in Mathematics and/or Language Arts. If you are unsure, please talk with your student's classroom teacher or last year's classroom teacher to determine if AIG Testing, may be needed to meet the needs of your student.
When a student is nominated, the AIG teachers will go to your student's current and last year classroom teacher to interview them about your student's performance in the classroom, ask for unit assessments, enrichment opportunities, and classroom samples. The classroom teachers will complete a teacher AIG Observational Checklist and a Gifted Rating Scale. The AIG teacher will also pull formal data such as your student's mClass data, CogAt and IOWA scores, EOG scores and Report Card grades.
All the above data is collected for each AIG candidate and presented to the Laurel Park Elementary's School Based Committee for Gifted Education. The committee will review the above data and makes the decision whether the AIG candidate should be tested for AIG consideration. If a student is being considered, they will be given the CogAt and IOWA tests on the below dates:
Fall AIG Nomination Window
Track 1 - Beginning of school year - August 17th
Tracks 2 - 4 - Beginning of school year - September 14th
Fall AIG Testing Window
Track 1 - August 22nd - September 2nd
Tracks 2 - 4 - September 19th - 30th
If you should have any questions about the AIG program or the process, please feel free to email me at astone@wcpss.net.
Thank you!

Hello Garden Club families,
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new gardeners and their families!
We are so excited to have you aboard.
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, August 17th at 8:30am. Please meet us at the garden in the back of the school near the preschool playground. As always, parents are invited to stay and help or drop their child off - whatever works best for you.
This meeting should be a fun one since we are turning over some of our summer crops and planting for fall.
Hope to see you there!
