This Week @ OPS
Good News & Highlights from across the District!
February 8, 2020
Senior lifelong living
Our monthly gathering for senior citizens took place at the high school this month. OPS was excited to share with them more about the robotics programs at the school and the skills they learn being involved with robotics. HS FIRST Robotics Advisor, Michael Miller, and Nate Hunt, a business partner for OHS robotics, along with four robotics team members provided information and demonstrations. The group was very impressed with the program and what the kids do for robotics each year!
Bedtime stories at ECEC
Mrs. Badders held a daytime Bedtime Stories session in each of the Learn ‘n Grow preschool classrooms. The kids came to school in their PJs, brought blankets and a stuffed animal to enjoy the books! Mrs. Badders also began a bedtime stories video on Facebook. She goes live in the late afternoon, but the video is available for families to watch anytime! Check it out on the Learn 'n Grow Early Childhood Education Center Facebook page!
Doodle for Google
Art teacher, Miss Pixley, started her 5th graders on the Doodle for Google contest. This is a real Google contest for anyone in K-12. Each year they choose a theme, and kids create a design that would go on the home search page. This year’s theme is “I show kindness by…” THe kids will join the national contest, but Miss Pixley is also going to run a building contest and choose a top 15 that teachers and students will vote on to select 1st, 2nd and 3rd place with fun prizes from Miss Pixley!
1st Otsego Choral Day
Friday, two musical professionals spent the day at OHS to work with our middle and high school choirs for the first Otsego Choral Day. They got to sing for the experts and get feedback; they also got to rehearse with these musicians and perform those songs at the end of the day as one large choir - all 175 students. They sounded amazing and had an incredible day of learning! The choirs usually go to a choral day festival at another school, but timing didn’t work out this year to do that, so they hosted their own. The students were able to get valuable attention from wonderful experts.
3D Instruction
With a grant he received last year, Michael Miller put on a two-day workshop for 17 Allegan County teachers to help them put together a 3D printer, learn how to trouble-shoot and design projects that'll all be translated into the classroom for students! Miller brought 3D printing to Otsego years ago and has spoken around the country and in London on 3D technology in the classroom.
District Crisis Meeting
Safety is a top priority at Otsego Public Schools and great conversations were had and tasks were set at this month’s District Crisis Team. Our building leaders were joined by local law enforcement to guide our practices and look ahead to future improvements.
Go Red Day
Staff across the district participated in Go Red day! Always the first Friday in February, Go Red Day is designated by the American Heart Association to focus on heart health. Wearing red and recognizing the day was also a part of our staff wellness challenge for February and it was great to see so many people participate!

STREAM Ahead to the snow hills
Now that we finally have snow, STREAM students are busy getting their cardboards sleds ready to race! For the 2nd year, STREAM students are designing and building cardboard sleds which they’ll race against each other at the Lynx next week. They’ll be scored on the structural integrity and design… but they must first make it down the hill - in one piece!
100th Day of School!
The 100th day of school was a great celebration of being 100 days smarter and hitting the learning milestone of 100, especially for young 5’s, kindergarten and 1st graders. The kids dressed up like they were 100 (so did the teachers!) and took part in all sorts of fun activities, games and snacks where they counted to 100!
