Eagle Sightings February

Caspar van Haalen, Principal

Dear Eagle Families,

February 1 marks the start of Black History Month. A time to reflect and pay tribute to the generations of African Americans who were subjected to some of the worst forms of dehumanization.

February 1 also marks the first day of the second semester. Yes, we made it through the first half of the school year! A time of anxiety and reassurances; of hopes and disappointments; of laughter and sadness. We made it through it all, and we did it together.

With much anticipation, our staff will soon be able to greet 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders for in-person learning. At that time, we will have all grade levels “back in business” on our campus. Our 3rd - 5th reopening plans are based on the plans for K-2, which have proved to be solid and successful.

A few friendly reminders:

  • If your child rides the bus, please make sure they know which stop they get on the bus. This helps our bus drivers when they drop them off.

  • If your child has a tech problem: for anything Google Classroom-related, please email the teacher. For anything hardware-related: please submit a tech ticket to the district tech department (online, ironically). If you have a connectivity issue, please contact your Internet provider.

  • With the weather doing as it pleases, clothes will get wet during recess. We have a limited supply of extra clothing. Feel free to send an extra pair of pants, leggings, etc., with your student.

We are a community of learners and do-ers. Our building is once again brimming with palpable opportunities and experiences. We cannot thank you enough for how you support your children. By you doing so, you are supporting us in the work we do. It is a tall order. Whether your child is back for in-person learning or still in teleschool, the ways family lives have been impacted are significant.

If there is one silver lining in all of this, I would say it is how it has brought us together in a microcosm of what matters most in our lives: caring. And while caring is nothing new, in this COVID era it has proved to be more foundational than ever. Children, in particular, need emotional safety, security, and love; a whole lotta love (yes, Led Zeppelin, 1969!).

I want to end with my usual pitch to recruit you for our PTO or sign up as a volunteer to help supervise recess - or even assist with health screenings as students arrive on campus. And, as always, please contact me with anything on your mind that you think I might be able to help you feel better about. Even if you call to just yell at me, I will still see that as a sign that I am here for a reason!
