March Newsletter
Note from the Principal
Dear KG Parents,
March is the month for our required state assessments. We will begin the process on Thursday, March 12 and, as always, student attendance during this month is imperative. Students will not be testing each day, so each day missed for orthodontist appointments or illness may lead to your child having to miss other classes to make up the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) or the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) testing sessions. There are five testing sessions associated with the IAR assessment, three sessions of math and two sessions of English Language Arts. Math tests are 60 minutes in length and ELA tests are 90 minutes. For testing, students should bring a pair of headphones due to the ELA test containing videos the students must watch and there is the capability for students to receive text to speech to listen to the questions. As with any important event, children should be well rested, have a hearty breakfast, and ready to do their best for each testing session. Our anticipated testing dates will be March 12th, 16th, 19th, 24th, and 26th.
The data gathered from these assessments play a role in placement decisions but are also how our school is measured against the other schools in the state according to the Elementary and Secondary Schools Act (ESSA). While the Illinois State Board of Education now considers more data points to determine our school’s designation, the IAR and ISA are still heavy contributors to our school’s overall rating. Please continue to stress the importance of these exams to your children as we strive to achieve an “Exemplary” rating. Our building wide goal is to increase the percentage of students meeting or exceeding state standards by 3% in both reading and math. The entire school came together to ‘rally’ around our goal last month. Students have been setting individual goals for testing the last few years and having a building level goal for this important battery of tests will increase the level of commitment for everyone in the building. The staff are invested in being the best school in the area and determined to meet that goal.
We are beginning to finalize all the events for the end of the school year. Once the district has determined when the final day of school will be for the year, we will be able to release the dates for the graduation dance, graduation ceremony, and the end of the year celebration. Some important dates that have been finalized and coming up soon are:
March 11 Spring Picture Day
March 30-April 3 Spring Break
April 10-13 Easter Break
April 16 & 17 Drama Club performance of “Little Women”
May 6 Band Recognition Concert
May 11 Chorus Recognition Concert
May 14 Junior High Academic and Athletic Awards Night
Sincerely,
John Jennings
Outstanding School Fees!
As we have passed the mid-point of the school year, we would like to remind families of outstanding fees. If you had initially set up a payment plan on your registration fees and have not made all your payments or had requested a fee waiver and have not receive an approval letter, please be sure you contact Mrs. Krumlinde and get your payments in now!
Students with outstanding registration fees are subject to exclusion to end of year activities such as field day, 8th grade trip, the graduation dance and the graduation ceremony. District 91 has also implemented a $20 carry over fee per student for any fees that are not paid in the current school year.
Kindergarten Registration is Right Around the Corner! Full Day Kindergarten has been approved!
We are currently in the process of planning our annual kindergarten registration. We will have roundup day on March 19 for anyone needing registration help. If you have a child that will be attending kindergarten in the fall with us please email Mrs. Krumlinde at lkrumlinde@d91.net with the following information to be added to our potential student list:
Child’s Name
Child’s Gender
Child’s Date of Birth
Where the child attends pre-school, if applicable
Parent(s) Name(s) and contact information (phone number and email address)
We will contact those on our potential list with registration instructions. We anticipate our online portal to be available by the end of February. If you know of any friends or neighbors with an incoming kindergartener that live within the District 91 boundaries that are planning to attend in the fall, please share this information with them.
Attendance Call In Reminder
Parents and guardians are reminded to call the attendance line by 9am, (815)838-0737 ext 1, each day your child will be late to school or absent from school. The attendance line is available 24x7. When calling, be sure to give your child’s name, grade, homeroom teacher name and THE REASON for the tardy or absence. We have many children that are unaccounted for on a daily basis and it is the parent responsibility to call the child in. Our auto-call system tracks the calls going out and it is very sad the number of parents that ignore the calls and emails. We cannot begin to safeguard your children without your help.
From The Building and Grounds Department
As part of our “Integrated Pest Management Program”, Lockport School District 91 will, as the weather permits, start applying herbicides and pesticides to both of our properties. The dates for these applications, weather permitting, will be March 7th, 8th, 9th, 14th, and the 21st. Additionally, application may be possible during the Spring break, the week of March 28th through April 5th, inclusive. Please be aware that applications will not be made on all of these days, but dependent on the weather, all of these days are possible.
The chemicals that we apply are similar to the ones that you would use at home; i.e., Preen® for weed control in the planting beds, and Roundup® for weed control along buildings, fence lines etc. All applications are done by an Illinois Department of Agriculture licensed applicator.
Should you have any questions, please contact Mr. Jim Pierson, Director of Building and Grounds at 815-838-0737, Ext. 1146 or by Email, jpierson@d91.net.
Note from the nurse
Spring is almost here! 4th & 5th grade students will continue to have recess outside when the weather allows. Please be sure that your child wears weather appropriate clothing to school.
Germs will still be floating around - proper hand hygiene is key to preventing the spread of germs to one another. Reinforce good hand and personal hygiene not only at school, but also at home also. Should your child need to utilize cough drops or any over the counter medication, please remember to sign the medication authorization release form and send in the medication in the original package/original label adhered to the medication.
Miles of Smiles is coming to Kelvin Grove on April 16th! Permission slips have been sent home. If you would like your child to be seen, please send in the permission slip back to the nurse no later than March 20th! If you misplaced the permission slip, contact the nurse to send home another.
Sixth grade dental exams are due May 15, 2020. The date is quickly approaching! If the Dental exam form is not received by May 15th, the school can hold the end of the year report card. There are approximately 25 dental forms missing.
It is not too early to start thinking about school physicals and dental exams for incoming sixth grade students!! Have your doctor and/or dentist complete an exam form and submit it to the nurse.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Parents: Please reinforce the policy of no cell phone usage in school, along with seeing the nurse should your child not feel well during school hours. We are finding an increase in students that are sending text messages to their parent/guardian stating they are sick and need to be picked up. The nurse, or a Kelvin Grove staff member, will always contact you should your child need to be picked up due to an illness.
4th and 5th Grade Guidance
In fourth grade, we began our unit about problem solving and students are doing a nice job learning the problem solving steps and how to implement them. Our problem solving model consists of four “STEPs”:
S - Say the Problem without blame
T - Think of Solutions that are safe and respectful
E - Explore Consequences - both positive and negative
P - Pick the best Solution and make a plan
Our final four Second Step lessons for fourth grade will be about solving playground problems, taking responsibility for your actions, dealing with peer pressure, and reviewing what we learned this year.
Fifth grade students have been working on associating feelings with levels of intensity and learning more coping strategies to use to help manage their feelings. We will be working on identifying the size of different problems and will review the Second Step lessons on problem solving.
Thank you for completing the Second Step homework activities with your child! I hope it is helping you to have some meaningful conversations and to reinforce positive life skills at home. As always, if you have any comments, questions or suggestions regarding the Guidance program, please contact me. I would love to hear from you!
A Note from the Parent Liaison/Student Interventionist/Problem Solving Coach
Kindness Matters! It’s become quite clear that education must encompass more than just academics, that in order for children to develop into happy, confident, well-rounded individuals, matters of the heart must be taken seriously and nurtured as a matter of priority. Kindness increases serotonin, which plays an important part in learning, memory, mood, sleep, health and digestion, kindness is a key ingredient that helps children feel good. Having a positive outlook allows them greater attentions spans and enables more creative thinking to produce better results at school. Kindness can be taught, and it is a defining part of human life. It belongs in every home, school, neighborhood, and society. We celebrated kindness the week of February 10th by having a spirit week for our students and by challenging them daily to spread kindness throughout the building.

The annual Daddy Daughter Dance will take place Friday, March 20th at Kelvin Grove!!! Flyers will be going home prior to the event so you can take advantage of an early discounted sign-up to attend the event, but walk-in’s are always welcome. The girls always have a great time with their dad’s, or loved male family member of their choice during this event. Make sure to stop by the photographer to capture the moment. A sign-up post will also come out through Parent Square-in addition to volunteers to help be at the event we also need help with decorating beforehand, after cleanup and donations of baked goods for the participants to snack on.
Keep clipping, or scanning!, those Box Tops. The third classroom contest ends at the end of the month, so if you’ve been hanging onto any clipped Tops, make sure to get them in ASAP.
