THOMPSON ISLAND
THOMPSON ISLAND partners with Boston Public Schools to help close the opportunity and achievement gaps by bringing students to Thompson Island every year throughout middle school. Program length ranges from one to three days with each student visiting Thompson Island two times per year throughout their middle school education. The programs are complemented by pre and post classroom lessons that prepare students for learning and “living” on the island. By exposing students to unique experiences and a new environment outside their comfort zone, Thompson Island Outward Bound ignites curiosity and allows students to push past their preconceived ideas of what they can achieve.
Guided by experienced instructors and supported by their teachers, students explore Thompson Island’s wide variety of ecosystems, from the tide pools to the forests. During hands-on outdoor STEM lessons, kids explore, investigate, and develop their ideas as scientists, fostering a sense of their own capabilities. Small group sizes allow students to build meaningful connections with their classmates and make it possible for instructors to provide support to students when they need it.
The structure of School Year Connections is meant to extend beyond Thompson Island; our Course Directors (CDs) will be embedded in partner schools to fully engage with the students, teachers and families. This allows us to build stronger relationships with schools and expands our ability to deepen social emotional impact. Our school presence helps us understand classroom challenges and opportunities; sparks collaborative planning and problem solving; builds capacity for teachers, classrooms and students; and improves student and family relationships.
The information above was provided through the Thompson Island web site.
DSA participates!
Last week our ninth graders attended a field trip to one of three schools: Bridgewater State University, Holy Cross, or the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Our seniors attended a trip to the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.
All of our 10th and 11th graders participated in the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test).
PSAT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test; One of the benefits is a kind of rehearsal for students who plan to take the SAT, which is the test most colleges require for admission.
Below are some pictures of our ninth graders at Holy Cross in Worcester.
October is College Month!
Why College Month?
College Month allows many different stakeholders to come together and raise awareness of the many supports our city offers for students and their families as they embark on this journey. As you know, the goal of Success Boston is to double the college completion rate for BPS students. When we began this work, 35% of students who enroll in college earned a degree in six years. Now, the rate is 52%.
If you have questions or suggestions, please reach out. If you are finding innovative or interesting ways to bring College Month to your network, please share them on social media using #CollegeMonth and #SuccessBoston!
Sincerely,
Office of Secondary Schools Team
