Touching Spirit Bear(Ben Mikaelsen)

Madelynn Duran

Garvey was a very supportive person toward Cole's situation. He tried his hardest to help Cole out of his place. Even though Cole didn't show any respect for him, Garvey respected Cole. Edwin taught Cole all of these symbols about life and how everything relates to it. Edwin believed in Cole and knew he changed and wanted to make things better. Peter finds it very hard to forgive Cole after what he did to him. He takes his time until eventually he decides to let Cole try and help him. Cole is a dynamic character who changes in the story. At first he was cruel but after something called circle justice, he realized how wrong what he did was. He wanted to help Peter although he was not willing to let him.

There was a lot of symbolism in the book... Here are five examples. 1) The spirit bear: The spirit bear symbolized pride, dignity, honor, and Cole's anger. 2) Rain: rain symbolized the "rebirth" of the character. (Cole changing) 3) Baby Birds with Mom: the baby birds and the mom symbolize Love, Life, and Family. 4) Fire: fire symbolizes Cole's anger. 5) The at.oow: The at.oow symbolizes trust, tradition, and shelter.

“A strange thought occurred to Cole: the world was beautiful. Yes, the world was beautiful….He wondered why he had never noticed this all before. How much beauty had he missed in his lifetime? How much beauty had he destroyed?” Cole realized that what he did in his past was wrong and he thinks the world is a good place.

I Am Poem

I am Cole Mathews

I am caring and dynamic

I wonder if Peter will ever feel the same about me

I hear silence

I see the spirit bear

I want Peter to forget what I did

I am Cole Mathews

I pretend I am invisible

I touch a bear nobody believes in

I worry that Peter wont forgive me

I cry when I get angry

I am Cole Mathews

I understand Peter won’t forget what I did

I say I want to help him

I dream of us being friends

I try to get him to talk to me

I hope we can be friends

I am Cole Mathews
