Crisis Drill Reflection
Friends!
First of all thank you for participating all year in our virtual crisis drills. Kelley and I made a decision early on that holding too many crisis drills was not good for kids. At the end of the day what we need to teach our students is that in all situations they need to be quiet and do what their teacher asks them to do. Our job then is to remain calm so that we can give them great instructions.
I will be honest when I say that I wrote this most recent drill with the shooting in Colorado this week in mind. I kept thinking not about the safety of the kids at CCE but how we would all feel about the situation if it was going on across the street. Though we don't want there ever to be a situation across the street - there is value in at least processing what we could do.
Highlights:
- calm, calm, calm - so many of you mentioned remaining calm
- going on with your day - kids respond to our emotions and reactions without us ever saying a word - if they feel like it's just a normal day they will not experience the traumatic effects.....at least not in the moment.
- supporting one another - almost every person who responded made some type of statement about being there for staff that have kids at MVHS. Covering their classroom, checking on them, etc. Great job team!
- having your cell phone near by - love this idea because it means you're ready at a moments notice to change plans AND you can easily see e-mail updates
