Welcome back to the 2017-18 school year!
Each month this newsletter will bring you information to highlight the experiences our students have in our school library. We will also inform you of learning resources, new books, reading programs, research projects, tech tips, special events, and other news. Meet the Library Staff
Alice Reinert--Teacher Librarian
Mrs. Reinert begins her fourth year as the teacher librarian at Wanamaker Elementary. She loves that she gets to spend her days with two of her favorite things--people and books! She thinks the staff and students at WE are the best! In her free time, she enjoys exercising, scrapbooking, spending time with her family and friends, and of course, reading. She and her husband, Mark, are the parents of 4 grown children--Caitlin (and husband, Carl), Austin, Alex, and Claire.
Jenny Armstrong--Library Assistant
Mrs. Armstrong starts her seventh year as the part-time library assistant at Wanamaker Elementary. We share her with Indian Hills Elementary where she is also the library assistant. She says the best part of her job is getting to interact with the students. In her free time, she enjoys Jazzercise, watching TV and movies, and spending time with her husband and kids. She and her husband, Jeff, are the parents of three children--Lanee, Ellie, and Rylan.

The presenting authors will be inside the Capitol building, and the vendors/entertainment/children’s activities/book signings will be set up outside the Capitol, on the North side by the new Visitor’s Center. Come to the festival for a great literary experience!
Summer Reading Ice Cream Party
The students completing the summer reading program at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library were treated to an ice cream sundae and brownie party last week. Karlee was also the lucky winner of the Barnes and Noble gift card drawing! It was a great way to end the week and to celebrate summer reading!
Check out these "back to school" books!
It's the first day of school at Frederick Douglass Elementary and everyone's just a little bit nervous, especially the school itself. What will the children do once they come? Will they like the school? Will they be nice to him?
The school has a rough start, but as the day goes on, he soon recovers when he sees that he's not the only one going through first-day jitters.

All Jeremy wants is a pair of those shoes like the ones everyone at school seems to be wearing. Though Jeremy's grandma says they don't have room for "want," just "need," when his old shoes fall apart at school, he is more determined than ever to have those shoes, even a thrift-shop pair that's the wrong size. But sore feet aren't much fun, and Jeremy soon sees that the things he has — warm boots, a loving grandma, and the chance to help a friend — are worth more than the things he wants.
Due to an administrative mix-up, troublemaker Donovan Curtis is sent to the Academy of Scholastic Distinction, a special program for gifted and talented students, after pulling a major prank at middle school. This is a funny and insightful middle grade novel by Gordon Korman.
