Identifying Parts of a Homogeneous mixture

Introduction

The object of this procedure is to identify the differing parts of a homogeneous mixture, and learning how to separate them. The data objective is to see if the substances will separate, how they will separate, and determining the individual parts of the mixture once the parts are separated. What are the materials of the homogeneous mix, and how did you determine it?


Safety Procedures

To perform this lab the following safety equipment will be necessary:

  1. Goggles: to protect the experimenter's eyes

  2. Crucible tongs: to prevent experiment from burning hands

  3. Be cautious when dealing with hot plate

  4. Lab apron: protect body/clothes against any hot liquids

Equipment

  • Goggles

  • Hot plate

  • 250 ml beakers

  • Evaporating dish

  • Wire gauze

  • Crucible tongs

  • Pipette

  • 200 mL of water

  • 2 tablespoons of sugar

  • 2 tablespoons of crystal light

  • Popsicle sticks(or other stirring utensil)

Procedures

  1. Put goggles on eyes before starting experiment.

  2. Place the wire gauze on top of the hot plate.

  3. Plug in and turn on the hot plate.

  4. Mix together 2 tablespoons of sugar with 100 ml of water in a beaker, and stir with a popsicle stick.

  5. Place a pipette in the sugar water mix, and squeeze the pipette until it is filled up with the sugar water mix.

  6. Release the pipette full of sugar water mix into an evaporating dish.

  7. With the crucible tongs, pick up the evaporating dish and place it onto the hot plate, right on top of the wire gauze.

  8. Watch as the liquid gets hot and begins to boil.

  9. With the crucible tongs, take the evaporating dish off of the hot plate.

  10. Take observations of the sugar water mix.

  11. Clean out the evaporated dish so there is no liquid or any other remnants left in it.

  12. Mix together 2 tablespoons of Crystal light with 100 ml of water in a beaker, and stir with another popsicle stick.

  13. Plate the pipette in the Crystal Light water mix, and squeeze the pipette until it is filled up with the crystal light water mix.

  14. Release the pipette full of Crystal Light water mix into the evaporating dish.

  15. With the crucible tongs, pick up the evaporating dish and place it onto the hot plate, right on top of the wire gauze.

  16. Watch as the liquid get hots and begins to boil.

  17. With the crucible tongs, take the evaporating dish off of the hot plate.

  18. Take observations of the Crystal Light water mix.
