January 1st was Public Domain Day
In 1998 Congress extended the copyright date for items copyrighted between 1923-1977 from 75 years to 95 years. That extended copyright term ended January 1st for copyrighted items published in 1923. Check out Duke University's Center for the Study of Public Domain's Public Domain Day 2019 to see what films, music, and print is now in the public domain and now free to use.
