Conquistador Corner
Arroyo Seco Junior High School -- October 18, 2019
Staff Stuff
It's been another busy week as we wrap up the first quarter and prepare for the start of the second quarter.
Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring a smooth and successful emergency/earthquake drill yesterday.
Please note that Vision Screening has been rescheduled for November 22, which will now be a minimum day. This was originally scheduled for October 11, when schools were closed due to the fire. We will provide more information on what PD will look like that afternoon.
Installation of solar panels in the main parking lot and the 800 parking lot will begin on the afternoon of November 22. Work will primarily occur during the Thanksgiving and Winter breaks so it should have minimal impact on our parking during school days (although we will need to move our cars out of the lots after school's out on the 22nd -- more on that later).
Thank you to Jesse and Heather and the CCR Focus Group for their contribution this week on pathways and what it means to be college and career ready.
Thanks for a great first quarter and have a fantastic weekend!

Hey there Arroyo Seco, congrats from the CCR Focus Group on getting to the end of 1st quarter in one piece!
We've had two very successful Career Panels already this year, one on Architecture & Construction, and the other focusing on Arts/ AV Tech & Communications. The next Career Panel will be Friday, Oct. 25th, and will feature the Education career cluster.
For those of you who want to learn more about the Career Pathways and what it means for our students to be College & Career Ready, we encourage you to watch the below videos created by Heather Coo!
Weekly Wellness
October- “Be Here Now”
Mindfulness is the nonjudgmental cultivation of moment-to-moment awareness. It’s a mental state in which you are focused and without judgment. Mindfulness helps us be here now so that we can make clearheaded decisions in the moment. We can cultivate mindfulness through meditation.
One of the easiest and best ways to practice this is to sit down, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. This can be challenging because as you breathe your mind goes sort of crazy, but you can learn to refocus on your breathe and feel your chest rise and fall. You might say to yourself “breathing in, breathing out” or you might softly count your breaths to 10 and then start again. And that is essentially how you do a sitting meditation.
Currently, scientists are helping bring meditation practices into the mainstream as they show us how we can use meditation for our physical health as well as to shift our minds and emotional experiences.
Check out this link to several guided breathing and meditation activities on the Onward Website.
