The Lion's Roar

SEPTEMBER 2, 2022

Big picture

As we roll into Labor Day, for many of us this weekend represents the unofficial final days of summer and the “kickoff” to the beginning of the fall season. Students, teachers and parents are in full swing, and we are all finally getting acclimated to the earlier mornings and later evenings. We have been in school now a little over three weeks and with that the 3-weeks progress report grading period ends today, September 2nd. Teachers will be finalizing grades and progress reports should be ready to be sent out on Thursday, September 8th. All progress reports and report cards will be sent out electronically this year through MISD Skyward Family Access. A paper copy will not be sent home with students. I will be sending out another notification next week once progress reports are complete. If you have questions about Skyward, MISD Technology Services has built a Parent Skyward Information page to provide resources for navigating the Family Access Portal. If you are having trouble logging into Skyward or are missing information/students, please use the bit.ly/MISDfamilyaccess to provide a detailed description of the issue(s) you are experiencing.

Thank you and we hope you have a great Labor Day weekend.

Student attendance is an extremely important factor in the overall success of students in the classroom. At Oak Hills, our desire is for all students to be in class every day. That said, we know that students will get ill, appointments have to be made, and unforeseen incidents occur that affect a student’s ability to attend school. In the event your student needs to miss school, please notify Mrs. Sedoff, our Attendance Clerk, at Shannon.Sedoff@misd.org or have your student drop off a parent or doctor’s note in the front office when they return to campus. Your student’s attendance matters! Attendance Office Website

In the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey, one of the habits is Begin with the End in Mind. This habit is perfect for all of our students. To be successful in classes, students and parents need to ask themselves, "What do I want?" For many, it may be to make all As; for others, it may be to pass the class. No matter the end goal, here are the habits that must be started now in order to achieve the ending you want.

  1. Participate actively in class. This means ask questions and take notes.
  2. Complete ALL assignments...absolutely NO zeros.
  3. Attend tutorials. Do you know when tutorials are offered by your student's teachers? If not, email them ASAP and ask.
  4. Take advantage of our re-test policy. Do you know that this year, EVERY junior high test can be re-taken if failed? (Courses for high school-level credit have different rules.) There may be tutorials or test corrections required by the teacher, so please email and ask them what their policy is.
Remember: The strong beginning creates a strong ending!

Whether you are new to MISD or a returning parent, we encourage you to join the Oak Hills Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). We are looking forward to a great year and have many exciting things planned. PTO Website
