HMS Library Media Center Update

What We've Been Learning

This month we have focused on story elements when writing book recommendations. Everyone included the following elements for a favorite book to recommend during Reading Week:

  • theme
  • title
  • author
  • main character(s)
  • problem
  • cliffhanger
These book recommendations were proudly hung in the hallways this month. Some students chose to email their recommendation to a representative at Barrington Books in the hopes of having it used as a "shelf talker."

READING WEEK

The Details

We had a fun-filled Reading Week at Hampden Meadows which included the following:

  • book trivia every morning with new gifts as prizes donated by author Barbara O'Connor
  • some classes traveling to Sowams to read to a younger grade
  • guest readers coming into classrooms and the library for multiple classes at once
  • Books and Blankets by grade level on the front lawn
  • modified Character Parade where a fourth and a fifth grade class were paired up to share out their favorite book characters
  • author/illustrator team Anika and Christopher Denise doing a presentation to the whole school on Wednesday afternoon

Bill Harley Author Visit

Author and musician Bill Harley visited our fifth graders during the last week of April. He was incredibly engaging and connected with the kids about writing and nature. He even brought his guitar and ended each session with a song. We were very lucky to have him visit!
