Room 8 News

Mrs. Fitzgerald, 3rd Grade

March 15, 2016

Hello Parents and Students,

This week we are reviewing "author's purpose" and how to use background knowledge to enhance reading comprehension. We are also learning about homonyms and we are continuing to read Shiloh as a class. We will be having our reading unit 5 test next week. Please feel free to review the comprehension skills found in the Reading Street textbook pg. 194-350.

In grammar we learned about articles (a, an, the) and all about adjectives. In writing we will be publishing our "Advantages/Disadvantages" essays, using the Pages app in the iPads.

In math we are learning how to find a fractional part of a set, as well as how to identify the factors of a number. We will also be learning how to identify the rays and vertex of an angle, as well as how to identify right and straight angles. In addition, we will be learning how to identify the number of degrees in a circle, a straight angle, and a right angle.

We continued learning about matter, including atoms, elements, and the periodic table of elements. In social studies we are continuing our discussion on economics and we will be reviewing the chapter nine vocabulary.

Egg Hunt

Our third grade annual egg hunt will be on Friday, April 25. Please send in 12 plastic candy or treat filled eggs with your child by Thursday, April 24. The plastic eggs can be found at the dollar store, Target, Lucky's, etc. Thank you!

Speech Competition

We will be hosting our annual speech competition on April 19. We will be competing against the other third grade classes at our campus, as well as the Capitol campus. In order to pick our representative, we will be holding a Room 8 speech competition on March 22. This is an optional event! Last week I passed out a poem to students who were interested in trying out for the speech competition. The poems should be memorized, paying special attention to voice projection, posture, eye contact, and expression. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Spelling Bee

Merryhill will be holding a Spelling Bee on April 7, 2016, which will include representatives from all of the norther California Merryhill Schools. Each class will pick one representative to compete in the spelling bee, which will be held in Stockton. In order to choose the representative for out class, we will be having a Room 8 Spelling Bee competition on Thursday, March 24. All students will participate in the spelling bee, and the winner will represent our class at the Stockton spelling bee.

The format of the spelling bee will mirror the Stockton format. Students will be required to state the word, spell the word, and state the word again. We will begin with third grade level words, then move up as the competition moves along. Please let me know if you have any questions!
