September 8th Edition

Reading and Writing Objectives

We will begin our second unit this Tuesday. In this unit, we will be focusing on learning how to code text and develop open ended questions based on the information we've read. This is in preparation for our Socratic Circle discussions. The students seek a deeper understanding of ideas in the text through this type of discussion. It is not a debate. Socratic Circles are done through thoughtful discussion rather than memorizing bits of information.

Our writing focus will be on writing summaries of non-fiction text read in class as well as reflections on our Socratic Circle discussions. We will integrate our Science content into our reading our writing during this unit. Our readings will focus on food webs and invasive species.

Math Objectives

We will be finishing Topic 2: Adding and Subtracting Decimals over the next couple weeks. We will continue with Lesson 2-5 on Tuesday. We will be testing Topic 2 on 9/15, so please expect a review to come home Monday, 9/14, for the students to review and study. We will be going over the review in class that day.

*Below you will find a link to Pearson Realize, which is the Math series we use. The students have an account, which we have already established in school. They each have their own username and password to logon. Both you and your child will find helpful links to practice pages, games, videos, and an electronic format of the textbook on this website. So, if your child has forgotten their book or homework page at school, he or she can easily download it from this site to complete and turn in on time.


We will be testing over Weeks 4 and 5 over the next couple weeks.

Leader in Me

I will be sending another email following the newsletter that contains an attachment about Leader in Me principles we are helping our Warren Huskies learn and demonstrate. Please take a moment to read through this brief document and spark a conversation with your child about our Leader in Me habits and what they mean to him or her.

From our Student Reporters: Delaynie Brown and Konnor Eslinger

Hi, I'm Konner Eslinger and this is my partner Delaynie Brown. We are reporters for Mrs. Kohler's 5th grade class. We interviewed Molly, Meadow, Emma, Jordan, and Jill and they told us some pros and cons about our class so far. They said that we do talk and we don't always raise our hand. However, here are some good things they said. Jill said that we all are great kids and have a good independent reading time. Yes, we have some things that we can improve on. Ok, lets not lie, we have a lot of things to improve on, but overall we are great kids. :)
