CDW Weekly Wrap-Up

October 8, 2021

A Message from Ms. Santa

CDW is officially midway through the first marking period of the 2021-2022 school year! We have accomplished so much already this school year in such a short amount of time. The students have completed the NJ Start Strong standardized tests, we had an in-person Back to School Night, the 7th Graders went on their traditional trip to Sharpe, and we are currently preparing for our 8th Grade visit to NVOT which is next week. (The permission slip went home October 1st and is due this upcoming Monday, October 11th.) Stay tuned for many more events yet to come!

Just a reminder, at the bottom of each CDW Weekly Wrap-Up are upcoming, important dates!

Advanced Art

If your child(ren) would like to sign up for Advanced Art during lunch for Marking Period 2, they will see the Google Form on Dr. Sullivan's Google Classroom on Monday, October 11th. It will close on Friday, October 15th.

The Hallways and Décor of CDW

On the first Monday of every month, Mrs. DeSciora's class reflects on the previous month's goal, and then sets new ones. This bulletin board is called, "Mindset Motivation." The goals are posted anonymously on the classroom bulletin board, which is a visual reminder.

The second display of Mrs. DeSciora's students' hard work is from the "The Lady or the Tiger" Door Assignment. The class read, "The Lady or the Tiger" and were tasked with creating a door that opens to reveal what the man saw when he opened the door. The students wrote a short paragraph to express their thoughts.

Halloween at CDW!

As in the past, the students and staff members are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to school. We will recognize Halloween at CDW on Friday, October 29th. Although teachers may engage students in Halloween-themed lessons/activities, we will follow a regular schedule.

When your child(ren) is choosing a Halloween costume, please remember:

  • The costume must allow the student to see to ensure safety.

  • If the costume has an accompanying weapon (knife, sword, gun, bow/arrow, etc.), your child will not be permitted to bring it to school.

  • Your child will wear the costume for the length of the school day so it should be something that allows him/her to walk and sit comfortably.

  • Costumes should comply with our dress code (page 7 of our Student Handbook).

  • Students do not have to wear a costume. Some students might opt to wear black and orange.

  • All students must continue to wear the "regular mask" that he/she has been wearing to school each day.

FRIGHT NIGHT is back!

The Old Tappan Municipal Alliance will be hosting the Annual FRIGHT NIGHT on Saturday, October 30th from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at Charles DeWolf Middle School. See the Flyer/Permission Slip below for more information. Your child(ren) will bring home the paper permission slip on Monday.

7th Grade Sharpe Trip

From Tuesday, October 5th through today, Friday, October 8th, the 7th Graders were able to continue the tradition of the CDW Sharpe Reservation Trip. Mr. Westervelt and the rest of the CDW staff who attended and chaperoned planned a variety of outdoor educational activities throughout the trip. Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to chaperone overnight. It was great to bring this CDW tradition back this year. Please enjoy a few photos from the trip below.

REMINDERS

Interim Progress Reports

The teachers will take the opportunity to enter comments about your child(ren) and how they are doing with the content in each class. These comments are compiled in a Mid-Marking Period Interim Report. This will continue for each marking period of the school year.

If you have any questions about any of the comments on the Interim Report and/or grades that you see in the Grading module, please feel free to contact the teacher(s) for more information.

The Mid-Marking Period Interim Reports will be available for parents to view on Tuesday, October 12th at 12:00 PM.

Picture Day

The CDW Picture Day will be on Tuesday, October 19th. Your child(ren) should have brought home a form with information on how to order. All students will take an individual photo that day, whether a package is purchased or not. There will be retakes in November, and more information about that will be provided at another time.

Please see the fliers below for more information.

Nex-Trex Plastic Film Recycling Program

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Please see the flyer below for more information!

Join the PTO!

The PTO is looking for volunteers to join the board and committees for next year!

Volunteers play a huge part in the PTO and what we are able to offer our students and teachers. Without volunteers, many of the programs that students, teachers, and families enjoy will not be able to happen. Volunteer descriptions can be found at: OTPTO.org under "More Info" and then "Flyers."

If you have interest in joining the PTO Board, joining or running a committee, or just want to learn more- please reach out to the PTO by visiting OTPTO.org and selecting "Contact Old Tappan PTO" under the Help tab.
