Field Trip: Alaska Junior Theater presents Black Violin (FULL)
Join us on November 2nd!
String duo Wil Baptiste (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin) have equal footing in the worlds of classical music and hip-hop. Accompanied by their drummer and featuring ace turntable whiz DJ SPS, Black Violin combines their classical training and hip-hop influences to create a distinctive multi-genre sound that is often described as “classical boom.” This extraordinary duo has toured the world, released three groundbreaking albums and worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry. About Black Violin, National Public Radio (NPR) says “Their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.” Black Violin will rise above preconceptions, break stereotypes and take you along for the musical ride of your life.
This concert will include an opening act with Anchorage string students working with Black Violin.”

The Science of Spices
*This month's topic has changed from the original email sent out*
Share a visit to The Spice Islands (Indonesia) and explore where the spices you eat come from. Explore an area rich in culture and investigate why it is prone to volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
The Science of Spices will help you understand where spices come from, how they are used, processed, and the practical science behind them. I will share how they are grown, stored, and what various spices taste like. Additionally, we will explore the history of the Dutch East Indies and how early trading helped us obtain the spices we know and use today. You will learn about a fish with teeth like a human, and sample a shrimp puff. This is a science class, a social studies class, and a geography class rolled into one!
If your student has allergies, please let us know.

October Recap
Our office is busy! Legos, junior legos, battle of the books, spanish, spelling bee, geography bee, and book club all continued this month. Deb Fancher hosted another amazing science workshop for the students which focused on dry ice and carbon dioxide. See the pictures below! Tasha Boin Photography visited the studio for school portraits and a lot of families took advantage of that which is great! We had a field trip to Alaska Wild Berry Products where students were able to tour the facility and sample chocolates and other goodies! I heard one student even go the eat the first chocolate snowman of the season! Terri hosted a STEM workshop which focused on programming and gaming. A lot of great things are happening here in the office so get involved if you aren’t already!
1st quarter progress reports and work samples were due October 31st! If you have not turned these in, please get them to our office ASAP.
