WBMS Friday Notes
September 13, 2019
Reflections from Ms. Williams
Happy Friday, WBMS Parents and Guardians –
Next Tuesday in homeroom, students will receive a four and a half week progress report. These reports are a snapshot of standards mastery thus far. Most classes have only recorded a few grades in the formative category; therefore, without anything in the summative category, it is too early to get overly anxious if grades are lower than desired.
Please remember all middle school course gradebooks at WBMS are set up the same:
- 60% - Summative (evaluates learning and standards mastery at the end of an instructional unit; possibilities - tests, projects, presentations, papers, performance-based assessment, final exam [8th grade course only])
- 40% - Formative (monitors, provides feedback, and checks in on student learning throughout the instructional unit; possibilities - quizzes, classwork, graded homework)
- 0% - Progress Reporting (monitors, provides feedback, and checks in on student learning throughout the instructional unit but does not count in the course grade)
High school courses taught at WBMS are set up the same:
- 50% - Summative (evaluates learning and standards mastery at the end of an instructional unit; possibilities - tests, projects, presentations, papers, performance-based assessment])
- 30% - Formative (monitors, provides feedback, and checks in on student learning throughout the instructional unit; possibilities - quizzes, classwork, graded homework)
- 20% - Final Exam (Cumulative Exam given at the end of the semester or End of Course test given in May)
Teachers work with their Professional Learning Community (PLC) to create Balanced Assessment Plans prior to each unit of study. Not all assessments will be graded or count in a student’s average. Please look at the “Progress Reporting” category for feedback on your child’s development that does not count in his or her average. Grades are a representation of what a student knows, has learned and can demonstrate. If your child is struggling in a course, please remind him or her to speak with both the compass teacher for overall academic tips and the course teacher for content-specific guidance. Each week our teachers offer help sessions in the morning, and students are encouraged to attend. Students do not need to have a pass from a teacher to attend a morning help session but need to check the board by the front office to make sure the teacher has arrived to school.
Here is the help session schedule for this year:
Mondays- ELA/WL/Reading
Tuesdays- Designated Meetings
Wednesday- Math
Thursday- Social Studies and Connections
Friday- Science
Have a fabulous weekend, Jaguars!

Fall TAG Screening
The Talented and Gifted program in Fulton County School System provides enriching experiences for the intellectually advanced and exceptionally creative student. Gifted services are available in all Fulton County Schools for students in kindergarten through Grade 12. All procedures for identification and service of gifted students meet guidelines of Georgia Board of Education Rule 160-4-2-.38.
The consideration for gifted services may be reported or automatic as defined by the GaDOE Resource Manual for Gifted Education Services. The Fulton County School System screens all students for eligibility for gifted services twice a year and uses a systematic approach to identify highly capable students who may qualify for gifted services. The gifted teacher routinely reviews available data to refer students for further assessment. Students meeting either the automatic screening OR the classroom screening criteria AND have supporting data gathered from test history, products, and/or advanced content levels are referred for additional testing to determine gifted eligibility.

Today we had a fantastic first FBLA general meeting as several members of the Alpharetta High School FBLA chapter joined us! These leadership members shared the importance of building communication and organization skills at school. Advantages of joining and participating in the Webb Bridge FBLA were also discussed including meeting new people, participating in competitive events, and fostering a smooth transition into the AHS FBLA when entering 9th grade. Our chapter’s leadership team shared information on our Point System and the LEAD program, conducted a prize give-a-way, and shared our chapter’s website located at https://wbms-fbla.weebly.com. It is here members can find information about our chapter, meeting dates, competitions, and general FBLA info. The FBLA registration link continues to be open. Dues of $25 can be made payable through the WBMS Cashless Payment system at the following link: http://bit.ly/wbmsfbla2019.
