Oak Hills Newsletter
Week of April 17, 2023
Message from the Principal
Dear Oak Hills Families,
I didn't have the opportunity to personally thank all of you for your support and attendance at STEM Family Night. It was so joyful to observe students and families spending time together at Oak Hills. There was a lot of positive energy learning, sharing, laughing and so many curious minds at work. We look forward to future family events and planning STEM Night again next year!
Parent Teacher Conferences launched on Friday, 4/14. Teachers shared detailed information about the available time slots and no school days. If you have questions or wonderings about setting up a conference, please contact your child's teacher directly or call the main office. Dawn Marie and Marylou can help with your questions or relay a message to your child's teacher(s).
Staff are looking forward to sharing information about your child's progress and continued areas of growth. Students are working really hard this year, and we can't wait to showcase their learning.
Have a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Ms. Do

Visitor and Volunteer Sign-in Policy
A reminder that all families need to check in at the front office when visiting or volunteering. If you are dropping off your student to class, per district policy, we need the parent/guardian to sign in and pick up a visitor badge and sticker. Dawn Marie and Marylou can guide you, and the check-in will be very quick.
Volunteers will sign in through the computer or on the clipboard. It is also a requirement for volunteers to wear a badge or sticker.
Visitors must be accompanied by staff during the school day or will be directed to a space where an event may be taking place (e.g. gym, library, classroom).
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Literacy Update: What is Lexia Core5?
In the fall of 2022, 12 schools were selected to pilot Lexia Core5 in their K-5 classrooms.
Lexia® Core5® Reading is an adaptive blended learning program that accelerates the development of literacy skills for students of all abilities, helping them make that critical shift from learning to read to reading to learn.
Students receive targeted instruction at their reading level in phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary and comprehension for 10-15 minutes a day. Teachers are provided immediate feedback about their students’ progress, and then are provided guided lessons to deliver to their students in small groups. These lessons can be remedial for students struggling as well as advanced for students needing a challenge.
We have had significant success meeting the needs of our students at Oak Hills. Below, you will see the data collected from October-March.
The district is considering purchasing this curriculum for all schools for the 23-24 school year. If the district does not pursue this targeted curriculum, the staff at Oak Hills may propose for the PTO to consider funding next year.

LAST CALL for 4th Grade Spelling Club
We still have a few spots left! A five-week Spelling club will be starting on Mondays, April 24 - May 22 (after school until 3:15pm). Each session will consist of a spelling quiz (of grade appropriate words given beforehand), a fun snack/treat, a spelling game, and some spelling bee prep because the last session will be an actual Spelling Bee! There will be prizes for participation in the Spelling Bee as well as prizes for the winners - including gift cards from Replay Sports Pub and Arcade, Menchies, and Amazon! To register, please fill out this form. Paper forms will also be available in the front office.
We do need parent volunteers to help with supervision so that we can have up to 30 students in the club. Please indicate on the form if a parent would be willing to supervise some sessions (must be registered in myimpact). We are also looking to borrow some supplies like Boggle, Scrabble, Bananagrams, and Dictionaries - if you have any of these and are willing to share, please reach out to alinahorrockspto@gmail.com. The goal of this club is to improve spelling and have fun!
