"God’s strength: turning to the good everything that happens to us, even the bad things. God brings serenity into our storms, because with God life never dies." ~ Pope Francis
Dear Members of the Nazareth College Catholic Community,
This past Friday, Pope Francis held a special prayer service at the Vatican, where he reminded us how we are all called to care for one another during this time and find hope in the midst of struggle. Standing alone in a deserted St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said: "In this storm, the facade of those stereotypes with which we camouflaged our egos, always worrying about our image, has fallen away, uncovering once more that blessed common belonging, of which we cannot be deprived: our belonging as brothers and sisters."
It made my heart happy to hear Pope Francis speak of the importance of belonging. Belonging is a word and concept that we have been using at Nazareth to capture the desire we have for our campus community. Belonging is genuine; it exists is at the level of relationship. To belong means that a connection has been established between the members of a community that transcends the physical. Think about it, we say how we belong to a club or group even when the club or group is not physically meeting. Belonging gives us an identity, an experience of community, and the comfort associated with such a connection - especially in times of great need.
As Catholics, Pope Francis reminds us that we are a community connected by our common universal faith. This spiritual communion unites in our time of need by our prayers and God's love for us. As members of the Nazareth College community, these days of separation remind us that while we desire to be physically on our Nazareth campus, Nazareth is much more than a physical location. Nazareth is a place in our hearts.
By most accounts, we have at least a few more weeks of social distancing ahead of us. In these days of physical separation remind yourself of all the various communities to which you belong. Embrace the assurance, support and hope these connections bring us in this time where we desire connection.
I miss you all and pray for you each and every day.
Pax et Bonum,
~ Jamie
