Weekly Memo for Washington Elementary
Principal Post
#proudpatriot
Thanks, celebration and appreciation:
- Thank you to our IAs for flexibility this past week as we work through gaps in staffing and tweaking of schedules
- Thank you to Lisa Hazlett for changing the marquee
- Thanks to our PTA for planning another generous donation to learning centers this year
- Thanks to K teachers for a great parent orientation and week of staggered enrollment
- Thanks to our RATS teachers for RACE days this week to help with expectations and community building
- Thanks to Vicki for great communication about all things surplus, fire marshal related, and storage and assistance with classroom needs
- Prayers for Lisa M and her family-remember the elephants, circle up and protect our own during their times of need
- Prayers for the Chapman Family, funeral details below
In addition, I hope this weekend allowed you the rest needed after the effects of "first week exhaustion". All in all we had a great first week. I was able to see some wonderful things happening in each of your classrooms. Here are a few celebrations:
- Walking through our centers and seeing that the Morning Meeting plan was being following and it was obvious which day it was and which type of meeting the team was having-All 4 classrooms on the same page
- Participating in a "get to know" project with a team that included all four classrooms searching to get to know the adults on the team (and beyond) through active ingestivation
- Very few tears from our new K students-we didn't have to peel anyone off their parents!
- New students to our SLE program have made very positive transitions, spending the most time in class.
- A couple of parents of special needs children, who didn't believe school could be possible for their children, already feeling hopeful because of the positive, caring and persistent help of teachers
- Many class gatherings during which community building is occurring and expectations are explicit

Professional Musings
KCS will offer two number talk sessions for teachers who would like the opportunity to learn how to plan and conduct a number talk in the mathematics classroom. The sessions are scheduled Tuesday, August 15 (3:45-5:00) and Tuesday, August 29 (3:45-5:00) in the Tennessee Room on the third floor of the ASC building. Theresa Feliu will facilitate both sessions. The sessions are appropriate for teachers who are new to number talks or teachers who just want to attend a “refresher” session. Both sessions will offer the same content – you do not need to attend both, just choose the one that best fits your schedule.
Please register for a session by August 11th by using the following link: https://goo.gl/forms/i3OqL0imWk3k0vDD2
Please indicate on the registration form if you have the Number Talk book by Sherry Parrish. If you do not have a book, one will be provided for you at the session.
For Your Information:
- We have asked Amy Duncan to call for walkers no earlier than 3:13 and for car riders to dismiss when the bell rings
- Attached is the morning meeting plan by each day of the week. Please make it a habit to utilize this morning time as agreed upon. We know there will be days this isn't possible, but commitment to teaching expectations for the Patriot Promise and helping children role play and solve problems together is crucial to our next steps.
- REMINDER!What is your music 911 song? Have you ever had a time when that perfect song changes your mood? Our social committee and I thought it would be fun to make a playlist of those songs that are our music 911 songs. We will play one at every faculty meeting. Please follow this link to list your 911 song.
