Higher Education by David Muren
High school may seem like a waste of time sometimes, and it may seem like it, but it’s not. School helps get an education, find your passion and help children get the social skills they need for the rest of their lives.
Most jobs nowadays require a high school diploma or some sort of high school level education to be accepted into. Proper education can lead to higher-paying jobs down the road, but without an education, people can’t. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated a 2012 unemployment rate of 12.4 percent among people without a diploma, compared to 8.3 percent with a diploma. The same study found that high school graduates’ median pay was $9,412 higher per year.
Schools help create social bonds as you are surrounded by sometimes hundreds or thousands of people in your age group, from here, you can find people with similar interests, hobbies, and more. The University of Florida says this about having friends in school “Friends are vital to school-age children’s healthy development.“ Having friends at a young age is very important as it can help define boundaries, learn others’ points of view, understand cultural differences, and much more.
“No country can really develop unless its citizens are educated.” -Nelson Mandela (former president of South Africa). An educated society is very important for economic growth. We need people to continue to learn and research so that we can constantly stay innovative. Countries with higher literacy rates also tend to be in better economic situations. With a more educated population, more employment opportunities are opened.
High school is not useless although it may seem like it. In school, you can pick up on social skills, learn skills that will help society, and lead to your own financial independence.
Emma Graber by Tristan Talbot
Here at Woodland Park High School, they are so many students that are involved in multiple extracurriculars including sports and clubs. One of these students is Emma Graber. Emma Graber is in 11th grade and is involved in sports like track and field, and cross country. She is also a part of the Beta Club and is the vice president of the key club.
Emma Graber is a part of track and field and cross country because running has always been in her family and she has always been excited to do it. She has been running in these sports since she was in 7th grade. In track, Emma ran events such as the 1 mile and the 400 in various relays. Emma joined the beta club because she wanted to be a part of a service-based club, and she was invited to the beta club. This is her first year being a part of the beta club as well. Emma was also elected president of the key club. She was excited to take this position because she felt she had enough experience to take the job, and she is excited to continue in this role as the vice president.
I asked Emma how she felt extracurriculars benefited her and benefited other students, and she told me that doing extracurriculars keeps you busy, and having less time on your hands could benefit your work effort, allowing you to work harder. Emma's role as vice president is to organize and communicate events for the key club to participate in. I asked Emma why she thinks other students should join extracurriculars and she said that it is a good environment to meet new people and make friends. The final question I asked Emma was what she valued most, she told me that she values her relationships with her friends and family over everything. That is most important to her.
In conclusion, Woodland Park High School has many sports and extracurriculars that students can try to benefit them throughout their high school life.
