Shrove Tuesday

We can't believe it was Shrove Tuesday already, it's really crepe-d up on us this year!

Thank you Mrs Fontaine for all extra hard work for flipping pancakes and getting them out to all our staff and students while they were still hot ! Mr Kucy and Mrs. Cossey also took some time to lend a hand.

Cold Weather

Mother Nature has decided we needed to feel winter this year so as the snow starts to fall and the temperatures drop, here's a friendly reminder to make sure your child has the appropriate clothing for outdoors. Students will be required to go outside for recess until the temperature reaches an outside temperature of -25C (this includes the wind chill). Students should have a warm coat and boots, as well as gloves/mitts, toques and snow pants.

Parent Alert Letter (Beacon)

February 17, 2021

Dear Parent or Guardian:

This year, Elk Island Catholic Schools has implemented a software monitoring program designed to help keep students safe. The monitoring program is called GoGuardian Beacon and is designed as a suicide prevention tool. We have set up the GoGuardian Beacon to detect when a student searches, creates, views or interacts with online content that could be related to suicide or self-harm. When something of this nature is detected, designated school staff members receive an email alert notifying them of the student and the specific actions the student did that prompted the alert. School staff will respond accordingly to each alert. Often, it will result in a phone call to parents or guardians letting them know about the alert that was generated. Additionally, through conversations, the school team will determine what other follow-up might be needed for supporting the student.

Using the GoGuardian Beacon monitoring system provides another layer of support for keeping our students safe and providing essential care for them. It is important to recognize that the GoGuardian Beacon software cannot detect every possible situation when a student might be suicidal. However, it is an effective way to grow in our awareness of which students may need extra support.

It is important for you to know that GoGuardian Beacon operates when a student is logged into his/her school-managed account on a chromebook. The program does not monitor what students do on their own personal devices, even if they are logged into their school account. We want to assure you that your child’s privacy is important to our school division and any information collected by GoGuardian Beacon is only shared with designated staff and is not put into PowerSchool or PASI (the database that houses all student records).

We know that parents, guardians and school staff all play a vital role in each student’s support network. We appreciate your support of division as we implement the GoGuardian Beacon monitoring system. If you have questions or concerns about it, please reach out to a member of our school’s administration team at 780-922-4522

Meet Our Parent Council - Shelley Leroux (Lively), Treasurer

Welcome to PAC Corner!

My name is Shelley Leroux (aka Lively), and I am your Parent Council Treasurer.

I decided to rejoin the parent council last year to get more involved and engaged in the school community. I have been a part of the Holy Redeemer family since my first child started Kindergarten in 2002. My youngest child is currently in grade 7 and our family has been a part of this school community for 19 consecutive years. Wow! Holy Redeemer has been there with us for many milestones: they have assisted my kids through learning difficulties, behavioural issues, and family tragedies. Some of my kid’s fondest memories with Holy Redeemer are travels to New York, Zoo school, endless field trips, sports teams, friendships, and of course the endless supports!

Parent council is a great way to get to know your school staff, community, and neighbours. We are proud to be a part of this community and we a very thankful for the many opportunities that both the Parent council and the school has offered our children. Did you know that Parent Council runs many programs to support your child’s learning environment, from educational subscriptions, to hot lunch programs, outdoor greenspace and even some of the playground equipment?

With all the changes in the school year due to Covid-19, some of you may be feeling disconnected to the school community. Your PAC is here to help! If you would like to find out more on what the Parent Council does, please join us at our next virtual meeting in March. All parents are welcome to join in.

Holy Redeemer Parent Advisory Council (PAC)

Please feel free to join our Holy Redeemer Parent/Student Council Facebook group. This is a private group for our school community only.

Choose Joy !

Elk Island Catholic Schools is invited to help bring joy to vulnerable women at Lurana Shelter as they take the first steps in building a violence-free life.

In just a couple of short months, Lurana Shelter will join Catholic Social Services' (CSS) portfolio of Sign of Hope funded programs, marking a critical shift in CSS' capacity to help women in crisis. We're thrilled to invite our partners at Elk Island Catholic Schools to be among the first to support Lurana as a Sign of Hope program!

Lurana is a 21-day crisis shelter operating 32 beds for women and children escaping domestic violence. By donating to your school's team, staff, students, and family of EICS are helping provide food, shelter, and security to women and children as they rebuild after violence.

We encourage staff, students and families to make a donation.
