Math
Ways To Practice At Home...
- Practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s with your child at home. This can be done while walking, passing a ball back and forth or jump roping.
- Practice doubles facts (2+2=4, 3+3=6, etc.)
- Involve your student in counting money. Your child should now know the value of every US coin.
- Ask your child what is 10 more and 10 less than numbers you encounter.
- Play the games listed above.
- Check out the games Addition Spin and Number Grid Game on the Everyday Math Website (login was given at BTSN, please email me if you need your login)
Reader's Workshop
This week, we also began our 1st lesson in the Journeys curriculum. We learned that sequence of events means the order in which events happen in a story. Next week we will learn to compare and contrast story elements. To do this, we will read several different versions of Cinderella in order to help us compare and contrast it with the original.
Ways To Practice At Home...
- Encourage your child to read at least 15 minutes each night.
- Read aloud to your child and have your child read aloud to you. This is a great opportunity for your student to practice their fluency and expression.
- Ask your child questions about the plot of stories (ex. Why do you think she did that?)
- Ask your child to retell a story or a chapter of a story to you using sequencing words (first, next, then, last)
- Ask your child how characters are similar and different.
Writer's Workshop
Next week, we will begin planning and writing our stories! We will write keywords on the tops of our story pages. The keywords help up remember what we wanted to write on that page once we get to it.
Ways To Practice At Home...
- Encourage students to write journals, comic strips, book reviews, newspapers, etc.
- Encourage students to tap out words. We've learned to "GUM" it meaning take a good Guess, Underline the word and then Move on. This helps build independence in writers.
Science
Character Education
This week Tatem celebrated the Week of Respect. Students thought about what the word "respect" really means, what it looks like and what it sounds like. Students were challenged to try out Acts of Respect on the playground. On Friday, the students got together with their Kindergarten buddies for the first time. 2R students showed respect by being friendly and polite when meeting their buddies. The students listened to a story about friendship then worked together with their buddy to create a Wanted poster for a true friend.
2R also learned more about mindfulness this week. We learned that mindfulness helps us calm down our bodies and focus. We practiced Star Fish breathing.

Order Due Date - Friday, October 27th
Our first set of Scholastic catalogues went home at the start of the month. Scholastic consistently offers a great selection of low-cost, high quality books.
Please take a few moments to explore the October selection with your child. For an even wider selection of quality children's books that are just right for your child's reading level, please order online at scholastic.com/readingclub. I have put together a list of recommended books for 2nd graders on the Scholastic website.
If our class places just $25 worth of orders, we will earn $10 in free books. With each order placed, our class earns more money towards free books as well as bonus points that I can use to purchase other materials like math manipulative for the classroom. It is a great program to get involved in. Thank you for supporting your child’s reading both at home and in the classroom!
